I grew up with NES, and I would never in a million years say Mega Man was the best game ever. Not even the best NES game.

Heh, what would you say is the best then?

Mario?

Yeah, that's a typical answer.

Mega Man 2-6 are better

Fanboys need to stop with the exclusives. Lets be honest and admit the obvious fact that UC2 and GoW series did not sell well enough to be remembered next generation for anything beyond the minority of gamers who played them. Sure they might love them but the game that most people have played and will remember is going to be Call of Duty.

Your topic is asking for the typical answer. Mario 3 is the best game on the NES is an answer most likely to have the highest frequency among the generation that most identifies as NES gamers. Along with Contra and Mega Man, too, for sure.

I'd expect the typical responses for the next gen to be Super Metroid, Chrono Trigger, A Link to the Past, Mega Man X, Street Fighter 2 or FFVI. Maybe Sonic.

Gen 5 has a lot of runners, Mario 64, OoT, FFVII, and MGS being likely top picks.

Halo and SSBM are really limited examples of the generation with possibly the greatest broad appeal yet. Wind Waker gets a ton of praise, as does SOTC and ICO. You also have FF and MGS still being strong contenders, and still popular new platforming franchises like the Jak and Ratchet games. Not to mention the immense popularity Metroid Prime brought back to its franchise that lasts today, or the insanely influential GTA games of this gen.

Anyway, I'd imagine Uncharted will be looked back on generally favorably. Definitely at least one of the Souls games, though I imagine it wont have a very large community all that long, I'm sure people will still throw it in with other favorites when making lists a decade from now.

But why "remember" Call of Duty when "Call of Duty 2025" just came out?

I dunno, maybe Catherine?.

That game has it all: addictive gameplay, challenging, beautiful art style and a very good story.

I wanted to jump in and say something like this as well. I was born in '84 and Vagrant Story (2000) is the greatest game of all time in my eyes. I didn't even like the combat system that much when the game came out. It took me until 2008 or so to realize just what a fantastically crafted game it is.

In twenty years, what will today's kids gush about? I honestly can't say with any certainty, but if I had to guess I would probably say something like Call of Duty, unfortunately. It's as widespread as Mario was when we were kids, and when a lot of these kids get older I can see them chatting about, "Way back when, do you remember playing Call of Duty? Back when you still had to use your hands to play? Those were the days, alright."

Also, the best NES game is obviously a tie between Little Nemo: The Dream Master and Super Mario Bros. 3.
