Has Rockstar always been this secretive when it came to the GTA series?

As in, revealing as little info as possible? From what i've heard they were like this with GTA4, but what about GTA3, VC and San Andreas? Did they keep info about the game a secret until around release date? Or did they usually release trailers or things concerning gameplay during the PS2 era, quickly compared to now?

Yeah. They'd release a couple trailers with Flock of Seagulls or something blaring to tide us over, but didn't really open up all that much.

SUMMER MADNESS is hardly blaring music.

Short answer: Yes.

They became overnight rockstars right off the bat. (no pun intended) They could get away with the snails pace of information coming out.

Yeah, Rockstar has always been "hush-hush" about everything they've released. Honestly, I like that they do that.

somewhat... But to give some perspective GTA5 has been by far, bar none the most secretive of all. So it is strange..
