Is it socially acceptable for grown-ups to like Japanese RPGs?

#1BearprintPosted 4/29/2013 6:45:29 AM(edited)
Some months ago, I read a very thought-provoking message on this website. A user said the following:

"If I see a 40-year-old man dressed in a Pikachu-T-shirt, I automatically think he is crazy or worse."

I couldn't help wondering about this, because even though I am a gigantic fan of J-RPGs and everything Japanese, I find it very scary that I would maybe think something similar. Had it been a Star Wars-T-shirt or even a Playstation-T-shirt, I wouldn't think anything of it.

The Japanese have created some of my favorite art of all time: Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy and Silent Hill, but I find it very strange that I would maybe not put on a Final Fantasy-shirt when I reach a certain age because it will make me look silly and "immature" to people not familiar with Japan - even though Final Fantasy and most other Japanese RPGs are very mature and beautiful with incredible music and stories. I am 25 now.

I find it strange. What do you guys think? Should we bow to the oppression of societal norms, or should we be courageous enough to be ourselves?

No, you must hide your power level

Play whatever you want, but try to dress your age and not wear Pokemon clothes.

It's even worse when you're 21 and people are already saying things like that to you.

Although, it's not just JRPGs or Pokemon, but gaming in general being a topic to laugh at someone's face the minute he's over 20.

Socially? What, are you gonna tell the world you play RPG or something? Keep your gaming hobbies in whatever room you play in your house and that's it.

There is a board for RPG, you know:

Let's face it right now. It's not socially acceptable for a grown man to like video games. You may think it's ok and I may feel the same way but people by and large do not believe that a grown man should be playing games period.

Grown men should have a consistent job, a significant other, 2.5 children, like American football (soccer if you're the rest of the world, rugby if you're from down unda), baseball, they must BBQ, drink beer, and punch their wife in the face every so often. Sure that is all changing but for now most women generally don't approve of men of a certain age playing games.

And no man or person above the age of 12 should be wearing a Pikachu t-shirt.

Keep in mind that when most people see Pokemon, they think more of the Anime/Movies. Which are definitely made for children.

Polite conversation should never include Politics, Religion or what constitutes an RPG.
Playing a game for it's story is like watching porn for it's story.

That's definitely changing quickly. Now it's more like it's not socially acceptable for a grown man to like video games, but a very large and growing percentage of grown men are on the same page that they like to game.

And yes, regardless of what it is, grownups generally don't advertise their hobbies on their clothes. Certain things are more acceptable than others, but in general it's kind of juvenile (I do it).

Contrary to popular belief, video gaming is now more socially accepted for adults to play in the West than it is in Japan.
