You put the HD in the new PS it would have to be formatted to work and everything will be erased you need to backup your HD first to be loaded on the new HD gotta revive your PS3 long enough to back it up

Even if you had a current backup on an external HDD there is still no way to transfer that to a different PS3 console. Everything is lost unless you manage to get you're original PS3 system up & running long enough to run the Transfer Data option. You'd also need an Ethernet cable to connect the original PS3 to the new PS3 >.>

Nope. The closest you could have come to that goal would have been if you had used PS+'s Cloud storage to backup your game saves...before your console died. Yeah >.>

Nope, your only options involve powering up your existing PS3.

For future note, you have two ways of backing up your saves:
- Copying them onto a USB stick (so long as they are not copy protected, which depends on the game)
or
- Becoming a PS+ member and having it automatically copy your saves to the cloud.

But it suck's, I know. The same thing happened to me with my Dark Souls save file that I was about 10 hours into when my harddrive blew up, and I additionally lost about 50 saves from other games as well. It's what prompted to get me PS+.

Yep, I know where you are coming from.

To be fair though, you had just as much chance of the hard drive crapping out than the PS3. And if it had been the hard drive then you still would have lost the saves. Off site backup will always be the preferred option.
