FF13 says otherwise. bad story with worse pacing ('it gets better 20 hours in' for example). totally linear.
sandbox and open world doesn't make a lot of difference, Infamous had a good story.
moral? theres good games and bad regardless of type.
I don't think linear games mean good pacing, it just means that developers have total control over pacing whereas in an open world game they have close to none. It's up to the developer to pace the game if they have that control. Square is just a crap developer.

Thats only if you enjoy the story. I cant tell you the number of times Ive tried to hit the start button in order to skip cutscenes because I didnt like the characters or the story.
If a game has the type of characters and stories you enjoy, then linear isnt too much of an issue. But if the game doesnt have the characters and stories you enjoy, its best left up to the consumer who the character and what the story ought to be.
