Need help on buying a new TV

#1DavidZ2844Posted 6/28/2013 10:44:11 AM
So I need a new TV because my 19 inch magnavox is bad and today is paycheck day. I found two TV's that seem to fit my needs, I will use the TV primarily for gaming and Netflix as well as blu ray movies. I really only have the space for a 32 inch so a higher size isn't really an option.

Vizio 32 inch 1080p 120hz smart TV $399:

Samsung 32 inch 1080p 60hz smart TV $449:

As you can see the Samsung one is a little more expensive and has a lower refresh rate. Is the price difference and lower refresh rate worth it for the Samsung brand over the Vizio brand?

Well, I just bought one online yesterday, will be shipped early next week. But I am in Canada so I don't know about you. But on Dell.ca there was a Canada Day sale which ends today. LG 47inch LCD 120hz 1080p for 499.00$ instead of 799$. Looks pretty good for the price and online reviews were very nice about it. If you live in Canada and can do online shopping, that seems like a good deal.

I don't even care if it is not top of the line as I have a 5 yr old 32inch Samsung that is all burnt and used and it still looks decent, just wanted something better and bigger. Hope I am not disappointed but if I am, I will just return it.

I came close to buying in-store at Bestbuy a Phillips 40inch tv 60hz 1080p. The quality was not as good as other tvs like LG or Samsung but was only 400$ instead of 700$ for the others. And online reviews for that Phillips were actually decent.

But if you have to choose between Vizio and Samsung, I suggest Samsung as I have never ever been not satisfied with their electronic products. Also, I don't think 60hz and 120hz makes much difference with a 32inch set.

Hell, I could sell you my old 32inch samsung for 100$ if you live close to montreal.... =)

Haha I actually don't live near Canada at all. And I've heard people say its worth it to get the Samsung over the Vizio, but that 120hz... And I've also heard things about input lag, is that related to refresh rate?

Well one thing I know is difference between 720p and 1080p is not noticeable in 32 inch models. When it comes to 60hz and 120hz refresh rates, I would say obviously 120 is better but I am no tech geek.

I would suggest to search for honest opinion reviews on google or youtube for a good answer on that. Also, find the model number of the tv you want and do a model search review on google to read actual buyers of the tv and what they think of it.

Vizio could be decent, for example, I consider Insignia a crap brand because you usually see those at places like walmart or sears or something. But some people I know actually praise it for the price and moderate quality.

I did one full month of searching before deciding on that TV I wanted and I am glad I waited for a sale because from what I see on youtube and google reviews, it seems pretty awesome!

Good luck on your new TV.

PS: I would say get 120hz and maybe 40inch minimum if you are going next gen as well. Samsung has a decent barebones model 37 or 39 inch. Also if you lives in US, search online for 4th of july sales, you might find something.

To be honest, I'd get a non-Smart TV version if that's available. They're cheaper, and you already have smart TV equivalent capabilities in the PS3. And, since people tend to have TVs longer than consoles, it's easier to "upgrade" the smart component.

Keep in mind the one with the higher refresh rate (probably) will end up using more electricity over time, so if you run that TV long enough it'll end up being the same cost as the (supposedly) more expensive one. I'd be happier with either one but would probably go with the one with higher refresh rate.

I cannot agree more, smart TV's are imo ripoffs. Especially if you have a ps3. And if you will get ps4 or X1, then you can keep ps3 for Netflix and blurays and use ps4 only for games, that way you don't burn out your ps4 as quickly. That is what I plan on doing.

So much misinformation. You really can't go by brand name alone. Even the big names have crap TVs. I suggest searching the model numbers on AVS forums or waiting till archizzy gets on here. There really is no point to 120hz. All it does it take the 60hz signal and duplicate each frame. Some 120hz TVs have frame interpolation which takes two frames and guess what the in between frame would be to artificially increase the framerate but it makes everything look unnatural and it can cause controller input lag close to a whole second.
