I love Silent Hill 2, bout I found SH3 to be much more disturbing and twisted.
PS3: Infamous, Saboteur, Silent Hill Downpour.

Silent Hill 2.

Great twist and emotional payoff.

And if it counts as a horror game, The Last of Us is definitely up there. It's riddled with cliches, true, but the writing and pacing are excellent, and the ambient dialogue is some of the best gaming has to offer.

Silent Hill 1 through 4 all have absolutely fantastic stories.

For the best overall game, I'd recommend Silent Hill 3. But if you are ranking story alone, then go for Silent Hill 2. It has a story that's on a level where most movies can't even reach.

I haven't played it all the way through, but Haunting Ground on the PS2 had a great set-up to a story -- one I haven't seen in games.

Same with Trapt. I liked its set up. But that's another one I never finished. Keep meaning to go back to it.

I would say Silent Hill 2 by a very clear mile, and as one of the best horror games ever made, it's worth playing no matter what you're looking for.
They're a herd of people eating monsters! We can't let them have their way!!
