Do I need to play American Mcgee's Alice before Madness Returns?

I mean is there a lot of good payoff for me to get from continuing through? Would I be absolutely lost in the story if I skipped to the sequel? It feels quite a bit dated... and if necessary I guess I can continue... but I'd rather not.

You don't absolutely have to, but it does help.

But if you buy the game new anyways you get a free download of the first game off PSN when you register the online pass.

you dont even need to buy the game new anymore. american mcgee's alice is on the online pass and every EA online pass is free on the store now.

as for the story, you dont need to play it, but you will miss references and stuffs in madness returns. imo, i wouldnt have enjoyed madness returns as much as i did if i didnt play the first one.

you dont need to play the 1st game at all to enjoy madness returns. I played the 1st game when i got it free with madness returns on its launch day and omg that game was so primitive i could barely stand it.

Dat nostalgia feel when I would play that game's demo on my relatives superior PC as a 'youngin. Man that game seemed awesome at the time. I even remember being at Target when that game first came out and this gamer couple were inquiring about it but apparently Target didn't have any copies and the chick was like "I want my Alice!"

Never did play the full game. Gotta check it out.

I'm glad I played it first. There are a bunch of references to the first game in the sequel, and certain characters play a much bigger part in the original.

Play it on easy though.

Any idea if you buy the Digital Alice:Madness Returns that is available on the "Summer Blast 2013" discount, does it give the first one? Or does no one know?

The first game is free for everyone now. You can download it right now and it will work whenever you get Madness Returns.
