I just had a thought while playing Dynasty Warriors 5 (PS2 Classic) which I downloaded from the store after finishing Persona 3 FES. Old games are much better than the new ones. I'm planning to get DMC HD collection after I didn't like the DmC demo. I'm planning to get FFX/X-2 remaster because of how crappy new FF has become. People, including me, downloaded and/or downloading Resident Evil 1-3, Code Veronica HD, and RE4 HD like CRAZY while the new ones are completely s*****. What is happening? Are there no more worthy games? are we going ahead to a generation full of generic shooters which are no different than each other?
Yeah, I find that very few games this gen are on the same level as what would be considered great back then. Very few companies are willing to do anything new. When I'm looking at my PS3 library to see if anything inspires me to play it, it usually feels like a lot more effort when compared to my PS1/2 catalogue.
They just ride the success of other games. I don't know where it began (Fallout 3?), but the whole post-apocalyptic wasteland full of monsters and/or savage bandits with gritty violence is doing my head in.
My most enjoyed PS3 games? Okami HD, Metal Gear Solid HD, ICO/Shadow of the Colossus HD, Bioshock...._maybe_ Skyrim (what do you know, so many dragon-themed rpgs lately...). The rest I can live without.
[Edit]: It's not that this gen has bad games (though some of them, especially recently, are over-rated to death), it's just awfully stale, and very few of them stand out as imaginative.
There was more variety back in the day, you had masterpieces like Oddworld, Broken Sword, Silent Hill, Wip3out, Alundra, all from different genres. Today's gaming has definitely gone downhill, sure we still get some good games, but it's a far cry from the good old days.
Though I disagree with you with Code Veronica, that game was mediocre back in the early 2000's and I don't consider it a classic better than today's REs, it's the worst in the series.
