Seriously, how is Dark Souls NOT a Jrpg?

#1ManservicePosted 11/12/2013 8:50:29 AM
How can a Japanese roleplaying game not be a Japanese roleplaying? Do people say it's not a Jrpg just because it doesn't have anime-inspired graphics, and you don't play as a spikey-haired teenager who's trying to save the world? If so, wouldn't that just make "jrpg" a slang term that stereotypes roleplaying games from Japan and not a regional term nor an actual genre?

Discuss.

Well, I've seen people use JRPG to mean one of two things:

1. Country of origin. If it's from Japan, it's a JRPG, period.

2. Type of RPG. If it has things in common with older console-based RPGs, which typically were developed by the Japanese, then it's been said to be a JRPG. This term doesn't usually apply to non-Japanese made games, but I would count a handful of titles made by Western developers that would be considered JRPGs - like Silver, for instance, or Septerra Core.

Many, many times, though, people use the first meaning of the term. The only time I've seen them not use that definition is when they're trying to make a (stupid) point, like with Dark Souls and such. A Western fantasy theme does not make it a Western fantasy game, any more than Record of Lodoss War is a Western cartoon because it strongly features Western fantasy themes.

This is the correct definition of JRPG, or close to it.

I would agree with you but then we would both be wrong.

It's not a regional term, at this point. It basically separates the evolution of Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy-inspired games from games that have evolved more from the King's Quest and Baldur's Gate sort of games.

The Souls series is heavily influenced by traditionally Western themes, art style and gameplay. It is not heavily influenced by the trappings of the stereotypical "JRPG".

People simply use these terms for convenience, there's no need to get bogged down in semantics. ;)

It's superficially a JRPG, but it's not something that's classified as the same type of game as other JRPGs.

Similarily, first-person games like Metroid Prime and Bioshock are not classified under the same type of game as Call of Duty and the like, regardless of what you superficially classify them as.

It's about the gameplay, and Demon's Souls has western style gameplay.

If we're talking about the style, it is most definitely not a JRPG.

The J refers to the style. Dark Souls is NOT a Japanese style RPG, it's a Western Style RPG (despite its origin). Or to ignore this stupid and tired debate it is an Action RPG.
