Have you ever switched difficulties mid game if a game lets you?

I hate games that allow me to do that. Now I know there's no trophy for beating the game on a certain difficulty

I dropped both Uncharted 3 and Prototype 2 down to easy just to get them the **** over with.

I made the mistake of starting Ninja Gaiden Sigma on hard difficulty.

Exactly once. God of War 1's rotating spike collums in Hades. Didn't make it any easier.

I generally don't but if the game is atrocious like Invisible War then I have no qualms changing it.

No. I just take break from the game and jump back on with my mind fresh a few hours later and I beat the level. I feel so accomplished beating a tough level.

Yes, in Mass Effect I was doing immediate comparisons of the difficulty levels.

Other then that I don't think I ever changed it temporarily to get past a part or anything. I rarely play games on the hardest difficulty though, I like a challenge, but I also don't want to restart a checkpoint 50+ times until I memorize it to death, then repeat on the next one.

Unfortunately yes.

On the Cerberus fight in original DMC3, it did not feel good.

I may have done it for a trophy at some point too, one of the God of war games I think? I put it straight back up again anyway.
