I agree with the tc and the only people who disagree are either peeves or don't have kids. And please anyone can keep there kids from watching junk tv the schools have rules about dress codes so that doesnt make sense.

And no kids aren't more mature then we give them credit for, now there are a few that are smarter but that does not make them mature in the least. There brains are still developing anyways.

Keep your opinions to.yourself unless your some professional who works with kids or have kids other wise you don't know what your talking about.

And by the way you really don't have a right to judge people for sheltering there kids, and you find a balance in between you don't shelter but you don't need to over expose either.

Agree TC. You shouldn't be coming here of all places for an educated debate on the cognitive abilities of children though, you'll get the responses above.

I know a guy that started smoking marijuana when he was 10, and the dinner table, with his mother.

Now in his early 30s, he's a family man, well paid job, nice car, own home etc etc etc.

Is he proof that it's okay to give children marijuana?

Sob stories about how you played violent games and turned out fine, are just that. Sob stories. Fact is you find your kid mature enough to "handle" adult content, but we all know you'd flip out if they watched something as natural as sex in porn

I don't consider sex all that damaging either... Stop assuming so much.

My kids probably won't touch anything approaching GTA levels until they're at least middle school age, but we'll see. I'm not going to say other parents should be the same way, but I do hope you're at least monitoring your kids to see if they're picking up and emulating behaviors that they shouldn't be doing. (And the influences extend far beyond video games.)

Not its true smoking to.much causes memory problems later on but so does alcohol.

I guarantee the testing grounds for those results, is dubious at best. It would take far too much to actually prove it, it's simply easier to speculate.

Just like the anti smoking, you'll get cancer, crap they throw around these days. If they truly lead to your death, they'd be murder sticks and completely illegal and the tobacco companies would be liable for a damn lot of money.

But again, it's easier to speculate and find someone with lung cancer, who smoked, and that's the kind of "proof" they have.

But i'm probably taking this substantially off topic

Oh, wow... Are you honestly implying that cigarettes don't make you more susceptible to cancer? I really can't tell if you're joking or not. I mean, seriously. I'm not even going to talk about marijuana because any data sets for it are going to be very small, but smoking in general? One of the most (if not THE most) studied non-genetic health issues of modern medicine? You're going to ignore all the data and evidence, as well as the fact that pretty much every smoker develops lung/breath related complications (not just cancer)?

I just hope for your kids' sakes that they don't end up suffering from lead or iron poisoning or something. Please, study some basic biology.

And they're not illegal, because?

My point is, if there was hard proof that smoking will lead to cancer, you wouldn't be able to sell them. Governments make billions in taxes from cigarettes, but they also have to look as though they have the publics health as a concern, so you end up with warning after warning when the majority is speculative at best.

Do they have a test subject that kept isolated till it was 18, then continued the isolation with him smoking (to eliminate any other reason) till he was 30 or 40, and he developed cancer or other complications solely from the cigarettes? No they haven't. So the evidence isn't rock solid.

They can come to conclusions easily, there's no doubt about it. But as to pure fact. No.

You are correct in saying that there is no proof that smoking causes any health issues whatsoever. However, the correlational evidence linking smoking to several types of cancer and other health issues is extremely strong, not "speculative at best." It would be unethical to conduct the necessary research study to prove causation (similar to what you suggested) on humans. As long as such a study does not exist, there is no way to legally prevent the sale of cigarettes.

Show me a modern child who doesn't throw a tantrum over being told no and talks to their parents with respect, and I'll consider that this child should be mature enough to play GTA V early. Too bad these kids are few and far between. Most (in my experience) are loud, disrespectful, anti-social d-bags with the temper control of a mentally unstable toddler.
