How would you improve wrpgs to appeal to jrpg fans?

#1KiraWinsPosted 2/12/2014 11:15:09 AM
Morrowind, Skyrim, Dragons Dogma, fallout , GTA, etc.

what would need to change for you brah's to like that garbage?

I for one lol'd when a lot of people were complaining about jrpg stories - imo the problem they have is not the stories themselves,
but how the 'humor', art style, and age differential transfers over and how its received in america.

imo, wrpgs really don't have much of a story. Its mostly like a single player mmo - similar to the dot hack titles. Not that thats a bad thing, but most of them are more bare bones more travel/ gameplay then actual story roleplaying of your character.

inb4 flamewar.

dark souls is a jrpg so I didn't really include it. :o

Obviously never played a WRPG if you consider them not to have stories.

Also, Dark Souls is not a JRPG.

There are good stories in WRPG's too, Baldur's Gate, Planescape and more recently Mass Effect,(Well, except for, you know...) to list a few
I think the reason people were talking about how JRPG's have bad plots is because the genre is a lot more prevalent than its Western cousin. More games gives more opportunity to fail.

This. and a lot of the companies making wrpgs are mainstream, more successful. there isn't a lot of no name developers pumping out games.

Would skyrim be a jrpg if it had been made in japan?
What about magna carta 2 should we call that a krpg?

This is why I hate categorising games by country of origin rather than style of game, it's meaningless.

The genre designation is derived from the game play not the country of origin. There's Korean RPGS, but no one refers to them as KRPGS.

Every one of those games has a story and main plot to follow. They are definitely more involved than Dark Souls which relies heavily on lore which comes from reading item descriptions and vague dialogue from NPCs.

agree. its rather stupid how it works. there should be another name for them since they really aren't that similar in playstyle (well, aside from the action rpgs) tradional turned-based jrpg's really aren't very similar to a more action-first person wrpg.

Wanna attract the Asian market? Well, here you go;

- Include a dating simulator
- Have "18 year old" girls in your game who show you their panties at every opportunity
- Tentacles
- Monster catching/trading
- Tentacles
- Need the whiniest protagonist possible who will emotionally break at every obstacle
- Wild hair cuts and an assortment of impossible outfits
- Grinding so you can grind later on more easily so you can grind the endgame to play the endgame
- Sweat marks, red squiggly lines and exclamation points everywhere
- Tentacles

That's pretty much covers it.
