Best Way To Improve PS3 Experience (Loading Times) (Dark Souls 2)

#1DarKnpPosted 3/15/2014 2:15:02 PM
With the PSN version of Dark Souls 2 installed on a Samsung EVO 250GB SSD instead of the factory 5400 RPM hard drive, the load times went from 25-30 seconds to 4-6 seconds. It's like night and day. Less frame stuttering, the menus are so much more responsive and it just is a much better experience especially if you plan to pump many hours into the game.

Samsung evo 250GB is only $140 at Best Buy(currently $40 off), takes 1 screw to install and is an upgrade worth spending the cash on.

You must buy the digital version to see these results since the disk version still loads data thru the blu ray drive. I tried it with the disk version and it was not as fast.

You need the full game to load straight from the solid state drive to get the 4-6 second load times. Now my ps3 is silent and incredibly fast. I plan pop another ssd in the ps4 once the prices go down because you need at least 500GB on that system when games are over 50Gb each.

Even though it's sata 1.5 the difference is amazing. From 30mbps read/write to around 200.

ewwww digital

well, this is the only plus side to digital i see so far. Not sure i want to put a $140 HDD in a console. Seems worth it, but not, at the same time.

I've been telling people for years to use 7200RPM on the PS3s. SSD is a nuclear option due to their cost.

I hope to get an 1TB SSD for my PS3 within the next 3-5 years, my backlog is big enough that I won't finish half of it by then.

Even Netflix responds much quicker when buffering and loading.

well I bought my super slim on Black Friday for 149.00 no tax. so I'm probably not gonna stick something worth $140 in there. I bought the 12gb version and immediately put a spare 250gb laptop hard drive I had lying around in it. I haven't noticed any slow load times at all in dark souls 2 and I do have the digital version. maybe sony just puts crappier drives in their ps3s?

They aren't even 25-30 seconds to begin with unless you've got some seriously crappy PS3. I have a slim with the stock HDD and my loading screens are never more than 10 seconds.

They're easily 25 to 30 seconds on mine. Get a stop watch and check. 10 seconds is quicker than you think.

"Get a stopwatch and check..."

Your argument was compelling, so I did just that. I just sat here and timed various loading screens for my Disc Copy of DkS 2 using my PS3 120GB Slim model. They were:

7
10
11
6
8
12
...and this last one was 10.

Rounding up or down to the nearest second. So my average loading time for those 7 tests was about 9 seconds.

Hmm. I have a phat PS3 with a brand new official 250 gig HDD, and my load times are much longer.

It's really annoying, as it takes a minute of loading (to Majula and back to the bonfire I was at) just to level up at the Maiden.
