Never been a Tales fan, always been a Fin Fan, so FFX for me.
Now playing: Batman: Arkham City - PS3

ToS has a fairly dated battle system in that you can only move on a 2D plane in combat, thus greatly restricting your freedom of positioning.
However, it is fairly enjoyable to string a bunch of artes together later on and do a bunch of damage.

FFX has as simple a turn-based system as you can get, but it can still require good strategy and party composition for some fights(Particularly in the monster arena.)

Everything else, I give to FFX, but not by a massive margin.
ToS still has a large cast of very likable characters that almost all have good development over the course of the game, and the story stays fairly consistent with itself with a few nice twists throughout.

Final Fantasy X is the better game overall, so Final Fantasy X gets my vote.

X. If I had to recommend a Tales game to get into I'd recommend Tales of the Abyss instead.
