A quick note here: Almost all of this guide is copy/pasted from around the internet with me merely reformatting or changing the sentences to fit the flow better. I've listed all the sources at the bottom. I'd recommend checking those links as the discussions within each of them has much relavent information.

---------------------------------------------------------------
1. Quick Facts of Killzone 2

Q: "Does Killzone 2 have a release date?"
A: The target release date is now February 27, 2009.

Q: "Will Killzone 2 include vehicles?"
A: Yes, vehicles are confirmed for the Campaign. But vehicles are NOT in Multiplayer. It is possible there may be future DLC to add vehicles but Guerrilla has not yet confirmed or denied this. It's only speculation.

Q: "Does Killzone 2 support 1080p and 60FPS?"
A: Killzone 2 will run at 720p and 30FPS.

Q: "Will Killzone 2 have Split-screen or Co-Op?"
A: Split-screen and Co-Op are unfortunately a no.

Q: "Is there HUD?"
A: There is HUD. In Multiplayer, it is optional. In Single Player Campaign, HUD is disabled for the highest difficulty setting.

Q: "How long is the game and how many chapters will it have?"
A: The game has 11 chapters in it. The length varies on the skill of the person playing the game.

Q: "How many difficulty settings are in the final game?"
A: There are 4 difficulty settings. The easiest setting will provide an aim assist feature to aid those newer to the First Person Shooter genre while the hardest setting will truely test your FPS skills.

Q: "Is there a jump button in Killzone 2?"
A: Yes, jump is included in Killzone 2, it appears the vault button has been removed. But, there are some costs with jumping, you cannot fire your weapon or throw grenades while in mid-air, the jump is also more of a realistic jump which means no "bunny hopping".

Q: "What is 'Lean and Peak?"
A: Lean and Peak is the term for the cover system used for Killzone 2's First Person Cover system, which is where the player is in First Person view while covering and firing.

Q: "I've heard the enviroments are destructible, is this true?"
A: Yes, Guerrilla wants the shooting experience in Killzone 2 to be 'fun and rewarding', but this doesn't mean that everything is destructible.

2. Premise and Plot

For an indepth, official backstory, I highly recommend reading the plotline.

Or if that link isn't working, there is a mirror of sorts in the following link

To view all of the cutscenes from Killzone 1, I'd recommend the links that are midway through this other faq.

For a quick run down, I'll summarize. In Killzone 1, the Helghast invade the planet of Vekta. It was at some point many many decades before Killzone 1, a Helghan Corporation colony; however, the Earth-based ruling bodies forcefully took control of it over tarriff and trade issues. To some this was unfair, to others it was justified. It makes little difference at this point. Because of this unjust take-over, many members of the Helgan Corporation began terrorist attacks against the new government of the course of many years. At some point, all the remnants of the Helghan Corporation decided it was best to just leave the planet, so they set off to their other not-quite colony of Helgan.

Upon settling on their new home planet, they quickly realized how hard life would be. Long story short - the environment of the planet affect their bodies over a few generations to the point where they were altered enough that they could be considered differnt than other humans. At the base, they still look human and are human, but they consider themselves to be super-human - better than humans.

Generations later, a ruler comes to power named Scolar Vasari. He pledges to rebuild the Helghan people and make them as powerful as they used to be. He also at this point coined the term Helghast for their people and made the wearing of the mask and goggles that is so iconic of Killzone to be a symbol of pride and unity as a nation. Formerly such gear was the sign of a lowly working class manual laborer. He then proceeded to arm the Helghast to retake their former colony of Vekta.

The events of Killzone and Killzone: Liberation occur and the only thing you really need to get from them is that the Helghast invade and are repulsed. Now, believing in error that the Helghast spirit is crushed, the ISA (Interplanetary Strategic Alliance) launches and invasion on Helghan to capture Scolar Vasari and end the Helghast aggression.

In Killzone 2 you play as Sev, a member of Alpha squad, in the invasion of Helghan.

---------------------------------------------------------------
3. Single Player

In the single-player mode of Killzone 2 you assume the role of Sergeant Tomas Sevchenko, Sev as he's known, as a part of Alpha Squad in the invasion of Helghan. Other members of Alpha Squad consist of your CO Rico and your two squadmates Garza and Natko. You will almost always be fighting alongside fellow ISA members in your struggle to capture Emperor Vasari.

The games consists of 11 chapters that span roughly 8-12 hours depending on your level of skill and difficulty settings. While you are mostly on foot, there are occasions where you man turrets, AA guns, tanks, and even a mech exosuit. When on foot you often will utilize Killzone 2's cover system, consisting of holding the L2 button to attatch to cover and then peaking out to shoot. However, unlike most cover systems, you stay in the first person while behind cover.

For more details, and possible spoilers, on the single player story, I would recommend reading over some reviews and impressions. The following link is to the Kotaku article on their "impressions" of the story mode. It is a lite-review of sorts but touches on all the aspects of the single player you would need to know beyond the basics above.

For more reviews and preview articles on various aspects of Killzone 2's singleplayer mechanics, plot, and gameplay, there is a link at the bottom of the FAQ to an index of every single review and many many articles about Killzone 2.

4. Multiplayer

---------------------------------------------------------------
4.1 Modes
There are 5 Online Multiplayer game modes. Assassination, Bodycount, Capture and Hold, Search and Destroy and Search and Retrieve.

Assassination: A target is selected on your team or the enemy team. If the target is on your team, you must defend within a certain length of time. If the target selected is on the enemy team, you must eliminate him within a certain time period. This game mode appears twice in a Warzone game. (Once defending the target and once attacking the target)

Bodycount: Basic Team Deathmatch with a cooler name. This game mode appears once in a Warzone game.

Capture and Hold: Capture target areas and defend them from the enemy.

Search and Destroy: You must destroy or defend your objective. To destroy your objective, you must plant explosives on two enemy objectives and defend them within a certain period of time without allowing the enemy to defuse the explosives. To defend your objective, you must keep enemies from planting explosives and defuse them if planted, maintain this for a certain length of time and you succeed in your mission.

Search and Retrieve: A more extreme Capture The Flag with propagranda speakers rather than flags.

All of the possible class combinations. Remember - you must first rank up enough to unlock that class then get enough ribbons to unlock the secondary ability. So don't expect to be playing as one of these when you put the disc in and hop online.

4.5 Additional Information

Are the vehicles online?
Not on release.

Does Killzone 2 support clans?
Extensively, it introduces the valor point system which your clan is rated by and can be bet against other clans. It can also be earned in tournaments. Clans have a higher limit of 64 members.

Is Lean and Peek in the Multiplayer portion of the game?
No. Guerrilla didn't want to force anything that didn't feel right. It was said the cover system felt too tacked onto the Multiplayer and that players would typically take a step back from cover so that they could crouch rather than use the Lean and Peek cover system. Guerrilla knows what they're doing so trust their decisions.
#4SephirothSolace(Topic Creator)Posted 2/4/2009 1:13:43 AMmessage detail
Follow up to previous question. If balancing issues occur, will Guerilla support the game with patches?
Yes. Depends on the severity of course and whether it is considered a real issue or not. Some people might just get pissed off about catching rockets with their faces and start moaning "boohoo the rockets kill me all the time" when in fact they suck a bit. We'll watch the game carefully post release.

If glitches and/or cheats start to surface in KZ2, then how extensive of support can we expect from Guerilla to not only fix the problems, but deal with those who abuse them to help them win in games?
There will also be online moderation and banning taking place if the user agreement is broken. There is also kick voting.

Clans INGAME Blogs with playstation EYE support and HDD import images in a future DLC?
Something to look into later. Benifit vs cost and time, etc.

Are you thinking of implementing a way to respawn near EACH of your Squad members, not just your leader?
No, the spawn-select screen would be a mess and it could unbalance the game too much. You of course have spawn-grenades and the Capture and Hold points to spawn on.

Will there be an option for dedicated servers? If no, could we maybe have them implimented later for things like clan matches to help even the keel?
Sure

What penalties are in place for people quitting out on your team or say a host quitting a game out right as the opposing team is to win?
If it is a clan game for valour say, the game would default to the remaining team. If a session master leaves, then a new one is picked. This should be a non-issue.

What features does the current Clan system have beside the valour points?
You get your own clan page where you can post news, challange rivals and manage your clan in-game and also plenty of functionality on www.killzone.com that links back into the game.

What are the kinds of options you can customize to your likings in a Private match? Like running speed, jump height?
Not so much the basic mechanics, but more options such as limiting weapons, the points scored, timings of the modes and so on.

Can a player be in more than one clan at a time?
No, only one clan at a time.

5. Controls

---------------------------------------------------------------
5.1 Sixaxis and Customization

The SIXAXIS is used in a few ways throughout the game.

-While sniping, if the controller moves, so does the crosshairs. This means you need to hold the controller steady while sniping, or that you can tweak the aim of the crosshairs a bit by minutely moving you controller. To clear up a misconception, the controllers sixaxis is "zero"d when you scope in, meaning if you are sitting with the controller at a funny angle or not perfectly horizontal, it doesn't matter, wherever the controller is when you scope in becomes the new origin. So you do NOT have to hold the controller out in front of you awkwardly or anything like that in order to snipe.

-When planting charges for demolition, you activate the primers by tilting the controller and pressing the shoulder buttons.

-To turn a valve, you hold a button and rotate the controller 90 degrees a few times.

While individual buttons cannot manually be remapped, there are a few options that can be modified.
-Invert X Axis
-Invert Y Axis
-X Axis sensitivity
-Y Axis sensitivity
-Zoom Hold toggle
-Dpad-L/R/Down - Inventory
-Crouch Hold toggle (MP only)
-Dpad-Up - Objectives (SP Only)
