Wizards - wand, staff, or weapon?

#1FightinIrish14Posted 5/17/2012 10:32:41 AM
Can someone explain to me the difference between a wand and a staff for a wizard? Are they almost the same? It's my understanding you can basically use a staff and shield or something else and a wand and an orb. Is this solely preference or is one clearly better? Which brings up another point, do you use a weapon with higher dps (such as a good two handed axe) rather than the wand/staff if it's dps is higher? Since your spells are a % of your weapon dps? What are the advantages an disadvantages?

Any weapon that gives a big into buff is probably what you should use

2-handed are the best, weapon damage is everything

look for weapon with these stats:

-high damage
-% attack speed
-Intelligence
-Open socket for ruby's.

Wands are pretty worthless. I though wiz would be better with a staff but they're not. Weapon dmg (regardless of what it is) is the base for spell dmg.

Ok so a two handed axe at 20 dps vs a staff at 18dps is actually better? Seems kind of counter intuitive for a wizard.

This. Ignore dps too, go for the slow high damage weapons that probably have less dps than faster weapons, but who cares, you want that pure damage for your skills.

That's what D3 changed in comparison to other games, they they made magic-casters actually be more item-dependent then before. In a way its better, cuz well, Diablo is for the loot. Also There are times when a wand/staff/orb might have less DPs but the stats that it have (most items can be equipped by all but offer class-specific stats) my outweigh any base damage that it would deal.
