Craft or buy Flawless Star+ gems?

#1MrPlanktonPosted 9/14/2012 12:47:59 PM
I was wondering if it's worth it to go ahead and buy the recipe (which is fairly cheap ATM) or buy the gems instead (I need 4 Flawless Star Topazes and they're around 1.9 million a piece on the AH).

I would buy the recipe, but I don't know how much it cost to make it nor how many tomes of secrets. I'm sure it's not at least 2 mil, or is it?

Worst thing about grammar police: They're cannibals. If one makes a single typo or error while 'critiquing' someone, they will be EVISCERATED by their fellows.

I just sold a perfect star ruby plan for 630k.

Figured was cheaper to buy them instead of make them.

I didn't think you were getting screwed by making your own, but after using that calculator it is pretty clear. Buy your gems. Don't craft them. Ever.

This game is so backwards it is unbelievable.

It's usually better to craft your own. Selling them is where it's not worth crafting, since you lose 15% of their value.

Some gems are under the crafting price because of RMAH.

It is about 1.6m to make a flawless star at the current material prices starting from flawless squares. If you are making four of them and the recipe is cheap enough, it is definitely better to get the recipe and craft yourself.

How so? I just did a calculation and it's by far a better deal to craft out of gems you've found instead of selling the gems and buying.

Assuming you have 81 Flawless Square Emeralds and you want a Flawless Star Emerald:

Flawless Square Emeralds are priced at 330,480. After the 15% fee, you receive 280,908.
Tomes of Secrets are priced at 35,148. After the 15% fee, you receive 29,875.
Crafting fees amount to 1,600,000.

Flawless Star Emerald is priced at 2,306,378.

In other words, if you buy the materials, it costs 1,965,628 to make a Flawless Star Emerald, saving you about 340,750. If you have the materials, selling them and buying the emerald would cost you 1,995,595 while simply crafting would cost you 1,600,000, saving you 395,595.

The only reason it would be more expensive to craft your own is if you had to buy the plan, but the plan is permanent. Say you're making 6 emeralds, 3 for your armor, 2 for your pants, 1 for your weapon. The plan cost divided by the six emeralds is 316.9K per emerald. So buying the materials and the plan to make 6 emeralds means you save ~20K per emerald, and still have the plan in case your friends ever want any, or you need to make more to upgrade to the next tier.
