I think it's safe to say that FFXV is already in development by Hiroyuki Ito

There are two bits of evidence that confirm this:

1) Yoichi Wada has confirmed that internally developed HD games by Squenix Japan have been delayed because of FFXIV failing. Basically, no new HD games will not be announced until FFXIV: A Realm Reborn is out.

2) There was interview with Hiroyuki Ito in the December 2012 issue of a German iOS magazine. He said that the announcement of his large-scale project has been delayed by Yoichi Wada until FFXIV : A Realm Reborn is released worldwide and gains a certain amount of global subscribers.

Conclusion: I think it's safe to say that FFXV is already being made and Hiroyuki Ito is directing it. It looks like Tetsuya Nomura was not joking when he said the story of FF Versus XIII was too extreme to be done in a mainline FF game.

Anything is possible, but based on the information(which IS true), it IS likely so. Like I said, there only three franchises under Square Enix that they'd go "massive project" with, Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy. We all know Ito would NOT be working on a new DQ or KH game, so FF is the only logical choice.

Of course, aside from that, under "unannounced titles", there's still this project that we have yet to hear about:

Don't think it's the Ito one, or that it would be a massive project(again, Square is hesitant regarding budget for new IPs, and would only spend money FOR a "massive project" if they knew it was a franchise familiar with fans)

I hope so. Ito was responsible for most of the greatest FF games. FFXII, FFIX, FFVI and he worked on the game design for every game that wasn't FFX or FFXIII (pretty hilarious, considering that these are the two worst FF games ever)

Yeah, I really hope it's XV. It only seems right. But don't get your hopes up, you might be surprised and disappointed at what it really is.

The worst FFs are 12-14

Ito is a brilliant mind though, and hopefully if it's true he'll be returning FF to a 4-9 like battle system. SE's problem is they keep trying to "revolutionize" FF, they need to just stick to what worked and stop letting CoD be an influence in gameplay.

They also need to use the hollywood model for the story and cut the dbz style crap but that's a whole other story.
