Another reason Versus XIII won't get renamed: "XIII" is planned to last 10 years

Back in April 2007, Shinji Hashimoto (producer of FF Versus XIII) said that the Fabula Nova Crystallis would last 10 years.

Although speaking with a Nintendo magazine, Hashimoto brought up Final Fantasy XIII as a comparison for Square Enix's decision to expand upon the FFVII storyline through the Compilation project years after the game's original release. "Different from something like VII, which we expanded upon afterwards, with Fabula Nova Crystallis FFXIII, we've thought about an expansive world setting from the start. Under the idea of wanting everyone to be sucked into the world for 10 years, we're preparing a number of categories." He likened this approach to films like Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings.

So from 2009 (release of FFXIII) till 2019, is the intended time frame to support the numeral "XIII". This is another forgotten reason why FF Versus XIII may not get renamed to FFXV. FF Versus XIII will be a game that serves to continue supporting the "XIII" numeral after the Lightning Saga finishes, even if that means releasing with the "XIII" numeral after FFXV is announced at E3.

Also, Yoichi Wada stated in May 2006 that the Compilation of FFVII series would enable the numeral "VII" to be active for 20 years (1997 till 2017). The numeral "XIII" was planned to follow a similar policy.

As previously reported, Fabula Nova Crystallis is indeed planned as the company's second major polymorphic content franchise after the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. In addition to the PlayStation 3-based Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy Versus XIII, as well as Final Fantasy Agito XIII for cellphones, more installments of the Fabula Nova Crystallis project could be forthcoming. Wada likened it to Star Wars or Gundam, and said that it would span a decade. While Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII for PlayStation Portable was generally believed the be the final installment of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, Wada thinks the Final Fantasy VII franchise will be alive for two decades, meaning ten more years.

It's also worth remembering that FFXI has now been supported with expansions for over 10 years and even had an expansion released last month. That's the numeral "XI" getting support over 10 years after it first released. Naoki Yoshida (producer/director of FFXIV ARR) has also stated that SQEX plan to support FFXIV ARR for a minimum of 10 years.

The only thing about the info that could mean much is if they still plan to support the numeral "XIII" for 10 years. If the do, there's a chance FF Versus XIII will not get a name change.

As I said, it all depends on if they still plan to support "XIII" for 10 years. They have supported "XI" for 10 years and plan to do so for "VII" and "XIV". If they still plan to support "XIII" then FF Versus XIII may not get renamed.

I guess I'm trying to say that SE is going through massive changes right now and honestly- any project or business model is in question. The game industry and SE's reputation have changed dramatically since Versus and Fabula Nova Crystalis were announced. Anything can change at this point and any news on Versus which is older than year or so honestly can be thrown out because its irrelevant.

SE has some bigger fish to fry:

Okay so now SE are contradicting themselves. They liken FNC to Star Wars, Harry Potter, and Lord of the Rings? Well those all have a continuing story in the same general settings, but about FNC games they said they're set in different universes and have no relation to each other. So....kay? Also TC, they said FNC MIGHT last 10 years, not the FF XIII name. Even so, 3 more years and it's done. I think they should just finish Versus and move on.
