Hiroyuki Ito is planning and doing some proposals for a new project (FFXVI)

Yeah his new project is a mobile game.

Something something Deadman's Cross.

Nope.

He already said in September 2012 that current gen hardware (PS3/360) wasn't powerful enough to handle his ideas. Therefore, there's no way a Smartphone would be able to handle them, either. His new project is most likely a PS4/One game, which therefore means it's probably FFXVI.

1UP.com: Was there a point where you think ATB reached its optimal form? Where you said, "This is what it needs to be"?

Hiroyuki Ito: First of all, I feel like the "optimal" ATB has yet to come. I think it's the advance of hardware, and stuff like memory within that... I always had to be concerned about things like that initially, when I started doing this kind of thing. It's getting closer and closer to the optimum level where I can do exactly what I want to. It's getting there, but we're not actually there yet.

Assuming that FFXVI will use the Luminous Studio 100% fully (not DirectX 11 and only some Luminous Studio, which FFXV is doing), FFXVI will hopefully have in-game character models as detailed as the ones in the screenshots below. They're from a MMORPG called Black Desert Online, which is being developed for PC/PS4 and due for release in 2015.

It will be interesting to see if most of the FFXII team that are working on FFXIV ARR are given back to Hiroyuki Ito once the game launches.

To add to the above, how many staff remain on FFXIV ARR after launch, will be completely dependent on how many are needed for future patches and expansions. I personally believe not that many staff will be required. Not even 100, and certainly not the almost 300 that made ARR.

Seeing as Naoki Yoshida has said that he wants to have a major update for FFXIV ARR every 3 months (and an expansion every year), I highly doubt the FFXII staff will be moved off the game after launch (August 27th). This does not bode well for FFXVI starting major development anytime soon. It looks like it will stay in pre-production for a good few years.

Or, you know, get bumped up to FFXVIII because Toriyama's team will be able to work on FFXVI in the meantime and a team led by Tabata/Kitase would lead FFXVII.

Firstly, a Tabata/Kitase team doesn't exist. What you mean is the Kitase/Toriyama team (FFX/FFX-2 and FFXIII/FFXIII-2/LR:FFXIII), and they're the most likely team to make FFXVI once The Lightning Saga is complete. If that happens, then the next mainline FF by Hiroyuki Ito will end up being FFXVII.

That said, Tabata no longer has his own team. His team has been absorbed into the FFXV team, which he's acting as Co-Director for. Tabata will very likely be the Director of the FFXV sequels, too.

Cool interview, nice to see a bit about how he came up with the ATB system. I'd like it if he gets to direct XVI, I think he deserves at least another chance.

IMO, a FFXVI by Hiroyuki Ito has the potential to have as big an impact on JRPGs in the West as FFVII did. He just needs to make sure he goes all out with the game's world scale and amount of gameplay content. He needs to make FFXVI surpass Skyrim in these areas. Also, he needs to greatly evolve the ADB system and Gambits, and also make sure the game has in-game graphics that are equal to Agni's Philosophy.

All this needs to be enveloped in a mature story with branching paths and multiple canon endings, and of course, Alexander O. Smith's trademark Early Modern English dialogue.

It's not like Ito has his own team anymore. You come up with all sorts of theories as to how Ito could magically regain a team, yet deny that possibility for Tabata.
