I can't help but assume that the higher the value, the better it is... for a/some reason.

Yeh I wouldn't do that, sometimes you will miss out on Green items which turn out to have better stats than Purple, sometimes. But after level 15 onwards, nearly 95% of my current weapons are from traders. I say 95% because I still rely on humans to drop guns.

It's not completely useless for a skill.

I find the lock picking skill is not important, unless you want early access to M16 etc range weapons then you need Lvl 3. There's one M16 crate locate somewhere down the market in Slum.

Once you get hold to that gun you can almost forget about getting good weapons from those crates, because mobs later drops better stuff later following your character's level. In the end, nah not worth for me.

everything is luck based. unless u spend some time reloading and farming chests it probably wont be worth it. It is best gotten early tho so u can raise ur chances to get weapons like katana much earlier then usual.

if u plan on going through the game straight through without spending time farming chests then u can probably skip this talent.

Hmm, STG, I think that's a regular unlocked chest in the picture iirc,

I feel like the whole chest thing is supposed to be valid. Like in borderlands. They prolly need to tweak it.

Early in the game? It's useless. But this is a Loot based game and if you want the best loot then you'll need the lockpicking skill. Yes you can get some amazing weapons from quests but some things like the "Defender of the Motherland"(Orange named AK47) or the Eviscerator(Orange named Wakizashi) then you'll need to open chests and get lucky.

3 points is not going to slow down your ability to kill.

It could be but only the level 3 locked chests have a keypad on the front. Normal level 1 and level 2 locked chests are still gray with no other indicators that I have found which would point them out as being anything but an ordinary chest. Still, you could be right but my point remains valid since I have found a few orange weapons from chests. I'm sure if people skip the lockpicking feat, they will start skipping chests altogether for the most-part.

Negative. It's hands-down the best way to accumulate money early on. I cannot count the number of $10 and $30 weapons I found from shacks which only cluttered up my inventory and broke after a few swings. When I started looting locked chests, I was finding $200+ weapons. Lets not forget that early on in the game, the higher quality weapons come from chests but mid to late game, merchants and quest rewards yield the best results.

At this point, I am spending most of my time fast traveling around trying to find another purple machete to buy since I left mine somewhere (probably in the supermarket stuck in a thug).

The chest in that screenshot is level 0. A level 1 chest has padlocks. A level 2 chest has padlocks and a keypad. A level 3 chest has all padlocks, a keypad, and is a purply colour.

I've found a few orange weapons from chests. Usually a much lower level than what I am and not very good. It's mostly trash, and like I said in the other topic, it seems far more worthwhile to farm vendors for gear.
