I) The Basics

1. Question: What? First, what is Downloadable Content?
Answer: Downloadable Content, or DLC are items that Nintendo issues though WiiConnect24. The idea is that Nintendo can send people new items not formerly in the game’s data. A very cool idea. WiiConnect24 is used when Nintendo starts giving out the DLC. People without WiiConnect24 can still get these items by trading/ buying for them. So far, the only items released by Nintendo are the red pikmin (to Japan Gamers on Christmas 2009) and the top (to Japan Gamers on New Year’s Eve 2009).

2. Question: So what is Hacked Downloadable Content?
Answer: Hacked Downloadable Content, or HDLC, are items that utilize this function to allow hackers to create their very own items. Hackers can create their own images for and set these images as new items that function like similar items.

3. Question: So what HDLC are there so far?
Answer: Right now only 3 HDLC have been released by [The Founder of HDLC], the person who figured out how to utilize DLC. The items so far are ShinyBluePikmin, RedLightSabreV1, and BlueLightSabreV1. [The Founder of HDLC] is in complete control of what HDLC items are released to the public, and he does not plan on allowing people to create their own HDLC.

4. Question: What is the ShinyBluePikmin?
Answer: The ShinyBluePikmin acts like the Red Pikmin. It is a hat that you wear and is just a sky-shiny blue looking red pikmin; interesting to note is that when it is in your pockets, the icon appears as a helmet but when you drop it, it shows the cap image. A ShinyBluePikmin can be cataloged and you can buy it for 1 bell. If you sell it, Tom Nook will not give you any money and a message will appear similar to when you sell him a tire/can/garbage.

5. Question: What are the BlueLightSabreV1 and RedLightSabreV1?
Answer: These Sabres are items that were made by creating an entirely new sprite image and utilizing the ability of an Axe. They both look like colored sticks. You can wield both of these Sabers like an Axe, and like an Axe, you can cut down trees. The BlueSabreV1 never breaks and has the pocket and dropping icon of a Gold Axe. You can try to sell a BlueSabreV1 for 1,700,000 bells; however, it is impossible to hold that much so Nook will not accept it. A RedSabreV1 is almost exactly the BlueSabreV1 but the pocket image is a near-broken regular Axe. A RedSabreV1 sells for 250,000 bells. Both items cannot be cataloged, as they function like tools and tools do not appear in your catalog.

6. Question: How do I get these HDLC?
Answer: It is pretty simple. Just go online and find one. Someone is bound to be selling them. Note: if you connect with someone who has the data of a HDLC item, the game will update the data it into your game automatically. “Connecting with someone” includes going to their town, them going to your town with the item, them sending you a letter with said item, or you visiting a town where someone else has that item. After the intense activity of January 17, 2009, you are almost certain to find someone who has the data. NOTICE: Even if you do not pick it up or catalog it, you still get the HDLC data! The same applies to regular DLC.

7. Question: What about the Blue Falcon, Moth Orchid, Brown Pot?
Answer: Those are NOT HDLC items. They are hacked, but by different means. These items were already in the programming of the game. However, there are no known means of getting them YET, so hackers just make them appear in their files.

8. Question: What can HDLC items do?
Answer: They act like any other item. They can be a hat, mask, accessory, furniture, tool, or any thing else that function in the game. That being said, however, they are very limited to what item functions are already available in the game, such as ability to cut down trees, ability to wear, ability to check drawers. Hackers cannot create items with brand new functions, such as restoring grass. So do not expect any grassing growing seed hack items, because it is not possible.

II) Tech Specs {IGNORE THIS IF YOU GET CONFUSED}

1. Question: So, how does DLC work?
Answer: DLC works by sending code for items to players’ games. The code can also be uploaded by connecting someone with the code. However, the game cannot hold infinitely new items just by sending new code. The game can hold up to 256 different items; meaning only 256 lines of code can be uploaded into the game. However, there are literally thousands of places holders for the lines of code.

2. Question: Thousands? You just said 256.
Answer: Well, yea. The game has thousands of different placeholders for the codes of DLC, but the game can only have a max of 256. Most of those placeholders are just empty.

3. Question: So what are the placeholders for these items?
Answer: Most likely, you will not need to know this…
Nintendo Official:
"red Pikmin" item code: $AEB0
"top" item code: $C840
Unofficial 'hacked' DLC:
"ShinyBluePikmin" item code: $CA00
"RedLightSabreV1" item code: $CA04
"BlueLightSabreV1 item code: $CA08

III) Non-HDLC Hacked Items (Brought to you by Tmnt89)

1. Question: What are Hacked Items?
Answer: Normal hacked items are items that are preprogrammed into the game, but there is not way as of now to get them. This could change in the future.

2. Question: What are all of the Hacked Items?
Pikmin (Pikmin in a square pot, not the hat)
Blue Falcon
Invisible Chair (aka "not used")
Cranny wall (Nook's Cranny's flooring)
Cranny floor (Nook's Cranny's flooring)
Convenient wall (Nook-n-go's wallpaper)
Convenient floor (Nook-n-go's flooring)
Supermarket wall (Nookway's wallpaper
Supermarket floor (Nookway's flooring
Department wall (Nookington's wallpaper)
Department floor (Nookington's flooring)
Nintendo Bench
White Pot
Brown Pot (looks like the ones from Legend of Zelda)
Moth Orchid
Moving boxes (moves like a square table... spins on itself)
Fake Apple (it turns into a leaf when you pick it up)
Bee hive (cant pick it up)
Note in a bottle

3. Question: I though the Brown/White pot and the Moth Orchid were Region Exclusive Items?
Answer: No they are not. They are items hacked from stores or other places in the game.

4. Question: Who helped with this section?

E-25 (gave info)
daisy888daisy (gave info)
lazybones18 (gave info)

IV) Issues

1. Question: Can these HDLC ruin my game?
Answer: No. HDLC are like DLC from Nintendo, just made from someone else. There may be some “side effects” but you game will be safe.

2. Question: What are these “side effects?”
Answer: There are 3 “side effects” that can occur due to HDLC. None of them are fatal in any, way, shape, or form. They are more of just what happens than any thing. In fact, side effects may be a misleading term, but I cannot think of another phrase for it. Rest assured, your game will NOT be bricked.

3. Question Statement: Side Effect 1: Spot Taken
Answer: The first side affect is the very, very unlikely to happen. If a HDLC takes up the spot of a regular DLC, or another HDLC, then those new items will not exist to the player. Let’s take a scenario. Say player1 has the ShinyBluePikmin in slot $CA00. Now say player2 has an InsertLameItem in slot $CA00 and goes to player1’s town. InsertLameItem is furniture while the ShinyBluePikmin is a hat. If player2 drops his InsertLameItem and player 1 picks it up, player1 sees it as a ShinyBluePikmin. Everything that is in slot $CA00 is a ShinyBluePikmin to player1. The same is true for player2. Every item that uses slot $CA00 is an InsertLameItem. The game compensates very nicely. So at worst, if Nintendo creates a DLC that uses the same slot as one of the HDLC, then a player will only get whichever item that player got first. This is VERY unlikely as there are literally THOUSANDS of slots that DLC can be placed in.

4. Question Statement: Side Effect 2: I Can’t See
Answer: The second side affect has to deal with the first side affect. Again, it will NOT mess up your game. If two players have two different items located in the same slot, each player sees something different. Let’s take the above example. We have player2 visiting player1’s town. Say player1 decides to put on his ShinyBluePikmin. Now to player2, that is an InsertLameItem, not a hat of any kind. Player1 sees himself with his ShinyBluePikmin hat on. However, player2 does not see the hat. Player2 will recognize that player1 is wearing some hat, but the hat will not be there. So essentially, Player2 sees a bold Player1. Again, the game compensates very nicely and it does NOT mess up one’s game.

5. Question Statement: Side Effect 2: Too Much!
Answer: This is the most unlikely thing that could happen by far. Because the game can hold only 256 DLC/HDLC items (which is a LOT), there is a possibility that someone could try to get over that cap. This will not happen, rest assured. With Nintendo and [The Founder of HDLC] the only people who can create these items, they will not let that happen. Say Nintendo kicks it into over time and releases a new DLC item every week (very unlikely as so far only 2 have been released in a couple months), that means that 52 DLC will be created in the next year. Say [The Founder of HDLC] does the same thing, which is still only 104 new items. Therefore, it would take over 2 years to use all of the 256 holds. Moreover, it is still very unlikely that Nintendo will produce that many DLC so fast; only two have been released so far. Furthermore, even if Nintendo were to produce that many, [The Founder of HDLC] could curve his production. It is virtually impossible.

6. Question: Are you absolutely sure that it will not ruin my game?
Answer: Yes, HDLC will NOT ruin your game. HDLC are exactly like regular DLC, only made by a different person.

V) FAQ

1. Question: Are you sure that HDLC is safe?
Answer: Yes, we are sure that it is perfectly safe. As I said earlier, HDLC is exactly like regular DLC, only released by a different person.

2. Question: Can they create an item to restore grass?
Answer: No, HDLC has very limited functionality. HDLC can only function like other items. HDLC cannot create its own functions.

3. Question: How do I avoid getting HDLC data?
Answer: You do not go online. Because of the intense speed that these items have spread, unless you know the person personally, they most likely have contacted someone who contacted someone who had the data of the HDLC. Nevertheless, that is not a good option. HDLC data does not hurt your game in any way. You have nothing to worry about.

4. Question: I GOTZ THIS SUPR KEWL IDEAZ AND I WANTS U 2 HEAR IT!!!!!1
4. Question: I want to make my own HDLC, how do I do it?
Answer: Uhm…k? However, at the moment only [The Founder of HDLC] and Nintendo can make DLC items, and I highly doubt either will have time to listen to yours and many others ideas.

5. Question: Oh no! I am infected! How do I get uninfected?
Answer: Normal players cannot, only those with Homebrew can delete the data responsible for DLC/HDLC. However, it still does not matter. HDLC data does not hurt your game in any way. You have nothing to worry about.

6. Question: Hackers are Lazy and Cheaters!
Answer: That’s not a question…moving on…

7. Question: When did all of this happen?
Answer: The ShinyBluePikmin and (Red/Blue)LightSabreV1 was released on January 17, 2009. If you haven’t visited anyone since then, you do not have the data. But the data does not damage your game in any way.

8. Question: How can I hack my game get items I want?
Answer: Can’t say, it is against the TOS.

9/ Question: Can I have a Light Sabre?
Answer: Sorry, no. Try looking around on the message board, Pahoheo_555 likes to give them away in his Evil Society of Evil.

10. Question: I’m still confused about _____, help please?
Answer: Okay, just ask away. Me and everyone else will try to answer your questions to the best of our abilities.

11. Question: Are there any tests that still need to be done?
Answer: Yes…here they are.
Test 1: Has it been tested if these items are overridden by Nintendo's Red Hat or Top?
Test 2: What happens when two people have two separate catalogs FILLED with different DLC

12. Question: Quick! To the Bumper!
Answer: *gives corn muffins*
