If any of you have personal experience is how much of a pain is it when you only have horizontal and vertical paths? because im making a city street path system and am wondering if starting again with diagonals is easier and more useful? help is appreciated.

Hmmm, probably, but do whatever you find easier. If you have already got far into the roads, don't bother.

I've got some diagonal paths, but I just have any old pattern down, so not of much help to you.
(the default bird cloth pattern in ables, and/or wendell's grass pattern).

All my straight paths are one tile wide, as I don't want to use a lot of space on them, but the diagonals have to be 2 tiles wide, otherwise its like stepping stones (tho I suppose that would also work).
Its more difficult to line diagonal paths with flowers, well I think it is.
Its a trade off, as they are definitely quicker than going round 2 sides of a triangle.

Play around with it, & check animalxing & ac community for their published patterns to see if anything would work for you.
Road patterns might be hard to do on the diagonal.
I've not noticed any diagonal paths on any photos or video's I've seen, but there must be some players who could post up something.
(personally no sd card & I don't wifi, but mine are nothing).

I use the horizontal and vertical paths, but I have used Diagonals on one of my bridges which was placed at an odd angle, it's not that much of a pain if you can work it in right with your other paths,
