Though you will get unlimited installs, you only do 2 activations and they say they will remove the DRM after a few years. That still doesn't change the problems it causes for your PC being malware and the fact the DRM doesn't even work shows how misinformed Ascaron are.

Copy protection is typically up to the publishers, not to the developers.
I'll never understand why this is a big deal, as I don't pirate, etc. Maybe I just don't know enough about it to be upset.

look at the mass review flood on amazon.com for spore

DRM is just a pest that doesn't hurt the people pirating the game, but the legit PC gamers

Just sealed the deal for the ps3 version...

I have no love for software restrictions on things I own.

Well we all saw how great the drm worked for bioshock, mass effect, spore..oh wait..

Methinks they are testing how much control pc gamers will tolerate, and from the reports of how well SPore is selling (never mind the backlash at Amazon), it seems the Sheeple will gobble it up. And when the time is right, they will move this kind of drm to consoles. Then a game will work only with that partic. console and none other. This could be done with fixed hard drives and online verification systems. Goodbye second hand market. Goodbye being able to resell your games or lend them to anyone.

Think of the massive profits those fatcats would make. Scrooge (not to mention the Devil) would be proud.

i don't sell my games anyway

oh well at least i already have a mass collection of good PC games and with no bull**** anti-piracy malware

You guys seem to be misunderstanding everything.
1. This was only confirmed for the German version
2. Copy Protection methods are up to each individual publisher
3. Copy protection methods may differ depending on whether you bought a boxed copy or got it via Digital Distribution
4. At least for the US version, there will be Digital Distribution versions for PC shortly after release
5. You get UNLIMITED activations under the German's system, all you have to do is double click a .exe and hit "OK" to revoke you lisecence and get an activation back.
6. Other versions beside's the German boxed version may not have SecuROM (just to reiterate)

Tom is the CEO and German, so excuse him if his English isn't the best. At least he, the CEO, talks to the English community. :) And since I learned this is an Ascaron idea, you can take it from me you can trust them :D. I know they're a cool company :D.

That's also my impression of them from all the love they put into the original Sacred (also developing free extra content long after release). Which is why I was a little surprised by this DRM news.

However, with unlimited reinstalls, no CD requirement and a licence to run the game on 2 PCs at the same time, it does appear that their implementation of DRM is a lot better than certain other companies who shall remain nameless....

still doesn't change the fact it will be pirated because gamers will hear it has DRM on it

Why do they bother.
