Do the battles get faster?

The battle system doesn't seem very fun to me and they go by slow. The spoils don't seem all too good and EXP gain is pretty small.

Also, an unrelated question...

Is the story THAT good? I've heard good things, but the few people I've talked to praised the story to no end. At this point, I have no real idea what the real meat of the story is, so no spoilers please.

In the beginning the battles do indeed seem a bit slow because your characters aren't all that awesome and you don't have a lot of the real fun stuff you get later. Once you get access to more arts, especially the AOE ones and more ability to attack multiple enemies, it gets a lot more interesting.

And don't worry so much about the experience gains seeming low. They are fair for what is needed for the next level to ensure that normal fighting will keep you on par and there is no need to grind. You can actually avoid battles entirely once you are getting less than 5-10 experience per character because at that point you are at about what is needed for that area.

The story being good or not really depends on the person. There have been some who don't think it all that great, and some that find it one of the best game stories ever. A big part of it really is the characterization and setting. At its core, the story is very simple and full of familiar elements. But it is how they tell the tale and how real the characters feel and how real the world feels that makes it a good story. It does start slow, but it is indeed building up towards a very satisfying ending that will end up leaving you wanting more as you likely can tell from how commonly it is asked when the next game is coming out. Yes, we want more, we want it bad because we loved this story and want more.

Pretty much answered everything so I'll chip in with minutiae. The spoils of battle in this series are quite neat because most of the time monster drops make sense in-universe. Either they drop parts of themselves or Septium derivatives (which monsters are attracted to).. You can exchange dropped Sepith for money but it's generally in your best interest to keep it for Quartz synthesis later on. The bulk of the items monsters drop are meant to go towards cooking, which can be used to get you very nice healing items with side orders of curing conditions or buffing stats, plus a trick to make infinite money later on.

Be not afraid of exposition.

You could write a book, call it "Unidentified Loving Object". It'd sell millions.

IIRC if you press the L or R button IN battle it will go into fast foward mode upping the speed simlilar to pressing R1 on a NG+ file of Chrono Cross.

Else the battles are slower unless you can kill the said target in 1 hit.

Uh. What?

L and R buttons are already mapped for screen rotation.

To the TC, you learn to ignore Vegh after a while. He doesn't have a clue what he's talking about 90% of the time.

Well theirs at least 1 button you press IN battle to make the battle speed turns act similar to Chrono Cross's fast foward mode but that specific button has to be pressed each turn that your PC's take to make the battles not slow at all.

I think he's referring to skipping the art animations.

Except that feature wasn't added until Ao no Kiseki.
