nonexistingheroPosted 7/10/2012 6:15:01 PM | The battle system is pretty unique. Feels like a mix of Lunar and Grandia 2. The chatter is often a bit much... walking around, getting more chatter, etc, for like 20-30 minutes without doing anything special is pretty common. Which can be a bit frustrating at times when I want to save my game.
Biggest downside is that the plot moves forward very slowly until you get pretty far in the game. And then it suddenly shifts forward very fast.
The characters are very good though and the script is pretty good as well. I like how the female is the main character in this game, even though there's a typical main-character-type character pretty much constantly accompanying her. The characters are pretty smart and the character development is superb.
The battle system is great. There's quite a bit of strategy involved, even in a lot of the normal battles. The characters are pretty unique, though they get moves at a rather slow pace. I dislike the experience system though. It makes me avoid battles, since... well, you usually only get a handful of gems while you need hundreds of them to make a single quartz. And with so little experience to be gained... I tend to just avoid fighting alltogether when I don't get much experience anymore, since I'll get way more gems further in the game. So that could've used a bit more balancing. It's also a bit confusing to figure out what kind of arts a gem will exactly give.
Lastly, using spells outside of battle is a bit of a pain. You go into the orbment equip menu, then you need to go down until you get to the healing spells. Saving and the quest log are nice though. And quite a bit of the music is nice. I love the battle song and the Zeisz town song.
All in all, it's still a very good game, with a couple of flaws. Some of them could've easily been prevented, so that's a shame. It reminds me of the days when developers were still widely ambitious with their RPG's. It's not a Xenoblade, but it doesn't need to be. --- Read the mania: http://www.fanfiction.net/~nonexistinghero In SA2, it's Super Sonic and Hyper Shadow. |
Justice98405Posted 7/10/2012 8:26:31 PM | Yeah, I more or less agree with you. I bought the game on a whim about a week ago, and it's quite cool so far. I'm at the beginning of the first chapter, and it's a fun, enjoyable game. The battle system reminds me of Grandia as well, and I LOVE Grandia, so that goes a long ways towards me liking this game, and the quirky but not too quirky characters and their dialogue is good stuff. From what I've read, I guess this is supposed to be the start of a trilogy of these games? So maybe they'll be able to improve on interface elements and such as the series goes on. Solid, fun game, well worth getting. --- To the mattresses. PSN: Justice_98405, Xbox Live: Justice98405 |

GurudaPosted 7/10/2012 9:38:00 PM | Is it entirely fair to talk about one game raising the bar when the other predates it by over five years? Just wondering.

The reduced EXP is Falcom's way of telling you that you're leveled up enough and should be getting on with the plot. For Sepith, they included Shining Poms specifically so you could farm them. Sepith turn bonus + any multi-hitting S-Craft like Pummel or Cannon Impulse = As much Sepith as you can carry. It definitely gets more convenient to farm the stuff in later games though.

There are a lot of improvements over the course of the series (currently at five games and counting) but for this trilogy of games, the interface isn't really one of them. It becomes much more convenient to cast Arts out of battle starting with the fourth game when they have separate menu options for setting Quartz and casting Arts. One thing that might explain the kinda clunky nature of things is that the first three games were made for the PC first so the interface wasn't quite as bothersome when you had a mouse and could directly click on whatever you wanted. Once they started making the games specifically for the PSP they tweaked things a bit.
Anyhow, glad to hear people are still getting into this game. It could use more fans. |

No exceptions or excuses. In that case, I'm afraid Xenoblade won't have any lasting appeal in the long run, either.
