Seriously, this game is amazing. I like the fact that while it's heavily team work oriented, you're not totally screwed if you decide to go out on your own. A bunch of times I'll sneak my way into an alien base and destroy their harvester (then immediately die, but that's worth it). And as an alien, if you go in and destroy the power source at the human main base, holy f***, you've done a service to your team. May not drain them on resources, but it does drain them on time.
Also, the way they combine RTS and FPS is really well done. The constant communication needed between players also keeps it entertaining. Only downside is you kinda need a mic if you're a commander, it may not be necessary if you're good at keeping tabs on everything and everyone, but it does help a lot.
One more thing, and this could only be because the game isn't that popular, but I find the community very mature. I've yet to hear any pissed off players constantly swearing or anything. More than that, after the game, when we're all in the lobby, people just congratulate each other, especially the commanders.

I agree. This game is pretty awesome. MOST commanders I've had were good, but on occasion you'll get one that complains or curses at the team. Having a good commander is absolutely necessary and when you have one that blathers on about the game being over when the base is still standing is frustrating and demoralizing to the team. I've had a game where aliens controlled the entire map and a single strong push put us back on even footing, and we eventually won. I generally leave a team that has such a commander.
I got this from the steam sale last month so I'm still pretty new, but the community is mostly supportive. I've been able to hop into the big chair once in a while and had helpful teammates give me pointers. Would be very nice if you could play some kind of practice mode as a commander.
That said I love how different the races play and how balanced things are. Flamethrowers should do a bit more damage to onos though.
There is a new patch that is coming out this week (Maybe, probably, might even be today, might be Thursday), mostly attempts at balancing a few things. Docking got major improvements to the way East Wing ---> Departures works, as well as Cafeteria. http://youtu.be/wc0MXIwoIAA http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AbZDkZ1beYw
The big content patch will come out after that. No guarantees that it will be this month though.
Yeah, I played the original when I was younger and I loved it. But now that I'm older and a bit better at games (and have a mic, and don't share an internet connection with my parents...) it's a blast.
Extremely well balanced, extremely fun.
