The "Official" FFXII:RW Sticky v2 *SPOILERS*

#1jkjklklPosted 1/2/2008 5:13:03 PMmessage detail
This is my feeble attempt at answering the many questions there are on this board. It probably won’t work, but please keep this bumped until stickied (or left to die). (and please do not post until I’m done)

A general hint: using Crtl + F and typing what you’re looking for will drastically speed up your search.

1) Should I get this game?
-That depends on your tastes. This game is an RTS, which means it’s a real-time strategy game. Things happen in real time, so you have less time to respond to a threat than in a turn-based strategy. You might also have to be able to change your strategy around to deal with unexpected changes.

2) Does this have multi-player?
- Unfortunately, no. There are no multi-player capabilities whatsoever.

3) Basics:
Controls:
Battle Screen Controls:
- Tapping a friendly unit will select that unit. You can then:
- tap an enemy with a unit selected to make that unit attack the enemy.
- tap a foraging point to make the unit forage to heal him/her and his/her espers. (leaders only)
- tap a farming point to make the unit get materials/items from the point. (leaders only)
- tap a friendly unit to make the unit you selected heal the second unit. (healers only)
- tap an inspection point will make the unit inspect what was tapped. (leaders only)
- tap a place on the field to order the unit to move there.
- tap a neutral or hostile summoning gate to order the unit to start capturing it. (leaders only)
- Tapping a friendly summoning gate will bring up the summoning menu. More on that later.
- Drag a box around your units to select all of them at once.
- Tapping a leader’s tab will select that leader and all of his/her espers. Tapping it again will select the leader only.
- Dragging down the tabs with the stylus will, well, drag down the tabs. Tapping a leader’s tab will also show the leader’s espers. You can tap an esper on the tab to select it. Simply drag it back up to get it out of the way.
- Using the D-pad or dragging the stylus on the touch screen moves the camera.
- R and L switch the two screens. Tap a place on the map to jump the camera there.
- X selects everyone.
- B de-selects the unit(s) you have selected.
- A jumps the camera to a friendly summoning gate. Keep on pressing it to cycle through your gates.
Menu Controls:
- Tapping the touch screen performs the desired action.
Vaan Controls:
- Using the D-pad or touch screen moves Vaan.
- Tapping a speech bubble or pressing A close to one will start a conversation with the person.
- Tapping a location or pressing A while near one will bring up a list of available missions at the location.
Airship Controls:
- The D-pad moves the airship.
- Tapping an arrow will land or change maps.

Can I change the controls?
- No.

Forging Pacts:
- You can forge pacts with creatures called espers after Llyud gives you the ring of pacts. To access the Ring of Pacts, go to the menu and select “Ring of Pacts”. Forging pacts with espers requires auracite, which you get from battles. Rank 1s need one auracite, rank 2s need 2, and rank 3s need 3. To forge a pact with an esper, simply tap the esper’s little circle.
What espers should I forge pacts with?
-Try to forge pacts with whatever element esper will give you an advantage over the enemy. Trust me, it helps.
Will I get enough auracite to get all of the espers?
-Yes.

Summoning:
- To summon espers, they first have to be in your active esper troupe (a group of five espers). On the battle preparation screen, tap the “espers” option to bring up a list of your esper troupes. Tap one of them to switch espers around. To do so, first, tap one of the blocks at the bottom of the bottom screen. You see those Roman numerals on the blocks? Those represent the maximum rank of the esper that can be on that slot. Simply forge more pacts to increase the number of high-ranking espers in a troupe. Now, just tap the esper you want and it’ll be inserted into the troupe. The tabs at the top divide the espers into elements. Tap a tab to select from that element.
- Now, to summon espers, select a friendly summoning gate to bring up a menu. Select the “summon” option to bring up a menu with your leaders’ pictures. Tap the leader that you want to assign the esper to to bring up the esper list. Now you tap the picture of the esper you wish to be summoned to add it to the queue. Summoning espers requires affinity. The number under the picture of the esper is how much affinity you need to summon that esper. The numbers to the right are: affinity used/total affinity. If you don’t have enough free affinity, you can’t summon the esper. Espers that need more affinity take longer to summon. You can free up affinity by dismissing your espers. However, even if the esper has been dismissed, it’ll take some time before the affinity is actually freed up. A leader can have a maximum of 8 espers in his/her group. Note that you can only have one Rank 3 esper on the field at a time.
- You’ll notice that when you start a battle, everyone automatically gets two espers that match their type (melee, flying, ranged, or healing). These are your starting espers. On maps without summoning gates, these are the only espers you can use for the entire battle. Rank 3 espers will never be starting espers, so if there aren’t any gates on the map, use a troupe without any Rank 3s. You can tell if there are summoning gates by looking at the top screen when selecting your leaders and espers.
- On the main summoning menu, there are also the options “queue” and “fortify esper”. Tapping “queue” will bring up a list of espers currently being summoned. If you find that you no longer want or need an esper, double-tap that esper to remove it from the summoning queue. Selecting “fortify esper” will bring up a list of the espers in your troupe. There will also be some crystals by their picture. The number of crystals is how many you need to temporarily raise the level of that esper for the rest of the battle. If you want to fortify an esper, simply tap the picture.
Will the esper troupe ever be higher than I I II II III?
-No.
What’s the best esper troupe?
-There isn’t any. Change your esper troupe around to maximize your affect against your enemy’s espers.
How come my Rank 3 espers are never summoned?
-You have to summon them manually from summoning gates. There are no exceptions. Ever.
What’s a Giza Bunny?
- A Giza Bunny is a White Hare.
If it’s a White Hare, why do you call it Giza Bunny?
- When I first got here, everyone was calling it the Giza Bunny. I started saying it myself and just got used to it. Besides, it sounds better.

The Sky Saloon & Forging Weapons:
- The Sky Saloon fully opens up at Chapter 4. In it, you can buy and sell materials, weapons and armor; talk to people; make weapons; unlock side missions; and decorate it.
- You unlock airship decorations by doing certain things. To put up decorations, talk to Filo. The areas that can be decorated are the central area behind where Filo is standing and the far back wall.
- On the right of the Sky Saloon is Tomaj’s shop. He sells weapons, armor, and accessories for your characters. He will also buy anything you wish to sell, with the exception of some special weapons. Talking to him will sometimes unlock free missions.
- On the left is Penelo’s “shop”. However, it’s not exactly a shop because you can’t buy or sell anything there. Most of the people in the Sky Saloon can be found near here. Talking to her will sometimes unlock free missions.
- In the upper-left corner is Llyud’s shop. He sells some of the materials you will need to forge weapons and will buy some off you too.
- In the upper-right corner is what everyone’s here for: the forge. Cu Sith will make weapons for you, provided you have the required recipe book and materials, free of charge. If you forge a specific amount of weapons and then talk to Cu Sith, you can unlock free missions.
To unlock the Cu Sith missions, do I have to make tons of different weapons or can I make lots of the same one?
-You can make multiples of the same one.
What’s with the questions Cu Sith asks?
-They determine any bonuses that are added to the weapon’s stats. Check abcd’s guide for a complete list.
Do you have a list of rare materials and where they can be found?

The Bridge:
- You probably won’t be spending too much time on the Bridge. Here, you can talk to people and access the Notice Board and Ship’s Log.
- Penelo is the main landmark here on the Bridge, because both the Ship’s Log and the Notice Board are next to her. On the Bridge you can also talk to Llyud, Tomaj, Filo, and Kytes.
- To Penelo’s right is the Ship’s Log. Here, you can view a list of missions and details about them; any recipe books you have acquired; the Folio, which is a list of important people, places, and artifacts; and the Log Entries.
- To Penelo’s left is the Notice Board, where you can start a free mission that has been unlocked. There are 3 major types of free missions. Monster hunts have a picture of a bug head (sorry I can’t describe it very well), treasure hunts have a picture of a gold brick, and rare monster hunts that unlock new espers have a picture of a dragon head.
Are there any missions that I can miss?
- Yes. You can miss free missions number 53 (The Trodden Past), 55 (Rally to the Cause), and 59 (That Left Behind). Just make sure to do all of the free missions before the end of Chapter 6 and you should be fine.
Which characters stay permanently and which ones leave after a while?
-Vaan, Penelo, Kytes, Filo, Llyud, Balthier, Fran, Ashe, and Basch stay permanently. Ba’Gamnan leaves after a while.

4) Strategy:
There are a few tough missions in the game that many people have asked for help on. Before I tell you the in-depth strategies, here’s a good hint:
What’s a good strategy that will work for most of the missions?
-Mob tactics almost always work, and require little micromanagement. If you split your troops up into groups (a leader and his/her espers), there is a greater chance that the leader may die, but that is still a good strategy. Spamming espers (mainly Chocobos) while running your leaders around the map only works on small maps with lots of friendly summoning gates. Some people have said that spamming healers works too, but the problem with that is that you have fewer attackers, which could be a problem.
Where is the best place to grind?
-Midlight’s Deep in the Well of Whispered Oaths in Feolthanos’s domain. Do the first level (there’s 10) over and over again for an easy 50k exp (or 60k if Ashe has her Embroidered Tippet equipped).
I need help on 1-4!
-Have Vaan and Kytes kill off the ranged guy while summoning tons of flyers for Filo. Filo should go with her espers and kill the melee guys.
I need help on 3-2!
-THIS IS NOT HARD!
Equip Vaan with either Sprint Shoes or Winged Boots.
Tap Vaan.
Tap the goal.
Please help me on the Ultima battle.
-Use mainly water espers for this one, with Leviathan as the Rank 3. First, dismiss all of your espers except for Vaan’s and Penelo’s. Then, summon them all back under Vaan. Wait at your original position until all of the espers are summoned. While the espers are being summoned, enemy reinforcements will charge at you. Kill them when they get to you. Once all of the espers have been summoned, kill off that large group of Bombs in the middle. Try to do this quickly because they can self-destruct and deal major damage. When they’re dead, go kill the enemy espers guarding the gate on the right. Once they die, you should notice that everyone else is coming for you now. Retreat back into the lower right-hand corner, and put Penelo and Kytes as far back as possible, with everyone else forming a wall around them. When Ultima finally gets to you, order everyone to attack her. Vaan should have his quickening up by now, so use it. Kytes should spam all of his magic, including Bio (if you have it). Ultima should go down soon enough.
