My turn to chip in and say that Odin Sphere's really not an RPG, so expecting it to follow RPG tropes is a bit silly. I think what's probably best about the game is that it's so unusual and hard to classify. It's an original game with good things that other games in the past have had, without necessarily emulating their bad qualities too.
The problem with genres is they have so much baggage, so many bad traits that people can't bring themselves to give up because of the nostalgia or because they don't even think about doing things differently.

The gameplay is not like an RPG at all, you can't compare it to one. It is a dungeon crawler hack and slash. You go from room to room clearing enemies till you find your way to a boss.
Tis an overall good game which comes short in areas and has a lot of frustrating issues.
Overall honest rating would be a 7 out of 10 since the production value is so and it is, despite it's many flaws and gripes, quiteentertaining and you keep on playing to finish it.
