Haywire Spells?

This has only happened to me once. Does this effect happen randomly, or can you do something to trigger it?

Spells AND Abilities can go Critical. The one for abilities is "[Ability] is stronger than usual!" or something like that. And it seems to happen to Spells more than Abilities.

Eh, healing spells don't go haywire. They gain a boost, if I recall correctly.

Sap can go haywire, I have no idea what that does. Higher chance to land, maybe?
