Where do you find this stuff out in the world? I got one for beating up a boss, but I foolishly wasted it on a shield upgrade. I'd like some more to upgrade my Gladiator's armor from iron to steel.

I believe this is relevant to your interests.
Right above Llafan Port is where you shall find it.

Don't you need lava lumps and Iron ore to change Iron to steel?
Not much of potato he said but potato he wrote.

Some items need Royal Soil instead of Lava Lumps.

lava lumps are for iron to steel weapons, royal soil is for iron to steel armor.
Or visa versa...

Either way Royal Soil is also used in other things as well so its nice to stockpile if you can.

Krazy, you got it. BREN, some of them do just need iron and lava, but these are mostly weapons (Iron Sword + Iron Lump + Lava = Steel Sword, same thing with the axe). The armor, though, you need iron lumps and Royal Soils. Go figure.
That map looks like exactly what I need - thanks a million!

Oops, mixed up the names in my previous reply. Well, you guys know what I mean. I'm gonna see if I can print that map out, looks like it's gonna save me a lot of trouble.

You can also steal them from Mad Maois (sp?), which can be faster near the beginning of the game.
