Question about gameplay changes, if there is any.

So I just beat the FC. And I really liked the gameplay, it was quite fun and unique. What I wanted to know though, is there any gameplay changes in this game, compared to the FC? Any improvement on the battle system?

They added a new system called Chain Craft where you can have your party members attack in a group for extra damage in return for each character added to the Chain needing more CP. That's the only major gameplay change. Beyond that, they basically take what FC gave you and force you to take advantage of everything. For example, you'll be spending more time using (de)buffs and cancelling moves like Hard Break to gain an edge.

There's also non-combat changes like adding Levels to your Orbment slots (allowing you to set more powerful Quartz), the Casino in Ruan, the game-long fishing minigame and so on.

Chain crafts are all physical hits only and yes like Chrono triggers 2x and 3x techs all pcs in SC will lose that amount of CP and will cause all those pcs to use up their turns at once.

While debuffing spells/CP cancel/delay moves are useful Agate + Wild Rage 2 (he starts SC with it) + use his level 24 FC S Craft in SC + start the game on easy mode is all you need to do to "break" the entire game has long as he's playable.

But remember to restore his HP since Wild Rage 2 drains 75% of his HP but restores 150% CP which is why he's so broken.

Yes at first chain crafts use 2 pc's and first cost 20 CP for both pc's (30 CP for the 2nd use and 40 CP for the 3rd use).

Slots get +2 more levels to unlock (level 2 in the Prologue chapter) and level 3 later on but while unlocking all 7 of Estelle's slots to level 2 ASAP does help the quartz to set them won't be buyable directly until chapter 2 or 3.

Because of Wild Rage 2 + S craft abuse Shining Poms are even easier to kill in SC when they show up.

For the casino only 1 fishing pole + a book similar to FC's collect Carnilia books quest the casino items aren't worth it (the accessories) are cheaper to buy via mira over buying for +1000 tokens (since it costs +50 mira) just for 1 token and winning the tokens takes longer then it does via a Dragon Quest game for them.

Hey, Vegh, are there any new playable characters?

Go to Gamestop, buy a Steam card, and use it to purchase Ys Origin. You won't be disappointed.
No news now-

Yes Kevin, Analace are really the only major ones that are new and permanent pc's the other permanent ones only show up for the final dungeon of the game itself or show up for like 1 to 2 boss fights/subquests.

IE Josette (the same female PC) you fight in FC becomes playable for the final dungeon and 1 part of the final dungeon forces you to use her but without a S craft until that part is completed.

Kevin first joins in chapter 1 but is still temporary, he leaves then doesn't rejoin again until chapter 2 again temporary, and a 2nd temporary PC Julia joins Kevin for the fight that ends that chapter of SC but Julia's only permanent in Kiseki the 3rd.

Analace is the same joins in the prologue can't be used again since she joins temporary in chapter 3, can't be used again temporary in chapter 8 and is only permanent in the party for the final dungeon.

Kurt from FC's battle arena match joins temporary but for only 1 subquest in chapter 8.

Agate/Schera SC gives you a choice to play 1 of the 2 as soon as chapter 1 starts and the one that you don't use joins Kevin for the 3 bosses fight that ends SC's 3rd chapter but because of Wild Rage 2 + S craft abuse Agate of course is the better choice.

That and Schera still won't get a AOE S craft until level 80 and Agate will still start SC with his level 24 AOE S craft from FC

There's also seven orbment slots instead of six. With that and more powerful quartz you can get some pretty awesome arts. For example, you can very easily get Olivier a nice setup to give him Silver Thorn (and most of the setups needed for it are pretty nice). Pretty much most arts you see from bosses are ones you can actually get with the right setups.

There's also some new status effects. Vanish is just downright evil when used on you, not only does it remove the party member from the battle for a few rounds, but they lose all their EP. There's also tiny as well, which is pretty similar to that effect in other games. There's also an art that at least one boss uses that is basically earth guard, but with arts only and lasts a few rounds. So pretty much you have to be ready to change up strategy on the fly at times.

Oh zin, you should know by now that Vegh takes all questions extremely literally and is Immune to Sarcasm.

And yes, the anti-Arts barrier is extremely annoying but it's not something you need to spend.too much time worrying about because of how rare it is. There's also a new status effect that makes the victim HUGE!which is also enemy-only.

Also it should be added that existing Crafts will 'level up' and new ones can be learned. For example, Zane's self- buff eventually boosts the stats by a whopping 60% and Kloe gets an offensive S-Craft about two thirds of the way in.

Well I still prefer using PC's that have good S crafts to use and IMHO Zane still doesn't.

Vanish in SC is limited to only the final boss fight and is rarely used As for the Artes guard effect in SC like FC very few enemies IF any use it even though I played SC in Japanese only on easy mode.

Agate + Wild Rage 2 + S crafts all you really need for the entire game even on Nightmare mode to make the game more broken (just have him join over) Schera as soon as chapter 1 starts.

Tiny/Large stats only exists for the final dungeon enemies (and during the final part) leading up to SC's final boss so its no big deal since unlike FC in SC's final dungeon you can and should already have 2 Grail Lockets to equip on 2 separate PC's.

As for Silver Thorn I rarely used it at all instead I would give Oliver the setup for Zodiac (which is a version of FC's Saint) only it targets all pc's at once reguardless of where they are on the battle grid and I'd rather use that over putting Zane in the party.

For Kloe its more then 2/3rds into the game ie she only learns the attack S crafts around the same time Dragon Drive for Agate is usable at level 80 and I only had Kloe at level 80+ for the final dungeon (I had her around level 75) for the end of chapter 7 and after that chapter ends she can't be used again until the final dungeon shows up.

But I'd rather still use Kloe's first S Craft even after learning her only attack one since it restores even more HP then it did in FC and revives dead pcs by way more the 500 HP.

Do note unlike Kiseki the 3rd, Zero and Ao No Kiseki for Vanish theirs nothing you can do but move out of the dark colored AOE effect circle before its used since Earth Wall/guard, Kevin using (Grail Sphere) his only S craft in SC won't null it.

As for the Arte's guard effect 1 boss uses its rarely used and its only used by 1 of the final dungeon bosses anyways.

My best SC import setup is the same one I used in FC: AOE/Single target healing spells, while Earth Wall/guard on the entire party.

So with the +5 Quartz set to Oliver to learn Zodiac as in Attack + 5, Defend + 5 etc the pc will still easily learn +10,000 single +6000 AOE healing spells at the same time (while having Earth Wall/ Guard useable) if you set EP +5 or EP Cut + 5 in the 6th or 7th slot.

Shining Poms also don't need S Crafts to kill them if you don't have 100% or 200% CP simply make a Str +300% Attack item etc and use those to kill the poms instantly since those food recipes ignore ALL defense stats.
#9VeghEstherPosted 10/17/2013 8:33:52 PM
And at that +75 levels for Kloe end of chapter 7 I can't use her again until the final dungeon and that magic S craft is only usable at level 73.

So its way more then 2/3rds into the game before its usable since the chapter 6 shining poms are only at level 60 or so.

Some additional info...

In the PSP version, Julia and Mueller both join permanently in the final dungeon. As of now, we don't know if this will be possible in the Steam version.

So basically, every character from FC is back, plus Anelace, Kevin, Josette, Julia, Mueller and Kurt. (Kurt is the only true temporary character, joining just for one sidequest.)
