New to Civ V. How are stats figured?

#1Griever810Posted 5/1/2012 1:27:54 PM
Just started playing and Im really enjoying it. Just curious though, when you build a city on a tile, how is gold, food, production ect figured?

I know if you press y, you can see icons to food, gold but it never adds up right. Same when I build a mine or whatever. When i build a mine that shows two gold icons, my gold doesnt go up by two. I couldn't find an answer amongst the advisers.

That's the most common question for beginners and Civ never really addresses it. Basically those icons are yield so if a tile has say 2 gold and 2 hammers than it is worth 2 gold and 2 production IF WORKED. To work a tile it needs to be in your territory and then you have to assign a citizen to it. This is where population comes into play, you know when that icon pops up on the side that says "X city's population increased" that means that city has one extra citizen, you get more citizens through harvesting food (i.e. building a granary or hospital or working food tiles with farms and such). You can assign a citizen to any tile in that city's borders via the city management screen when you click on the city's name and on the right you should see "manage citizens" or something. So the higher the city's population the more tiles you can work

On the contrary, you do not get the yield from every tile in your territory. For example when you first build a city, you have only 1 citizen but more than 6 tiles, you can only utilize 1 tile until you get more citizens via population increases

more unless you tell the citizen to work that tile, he will work whatever tile the govenor tells him to work.

there are 36 tiles around your city (4+5+6+6+6+5+4), you can only work the immediate 1 hex away until your culture expands.

here's my capitol last game I guess. you see the squares your citizens are working are there with the filled in circles, the ones with a LOCK are ones the player has personally selected because the govenor was working other squares for whatever reason.

and over on the left we got specialist buildings with specialist slots. providing the resources specialists provide.

I recommend going onto YouTube and looking for some Civ V tutorial videos. (I think I remember viewing MasterCiv5's tutorials). I found they made a HUGE difference to my game play because they discussed population management -- something that doesn't come up in the in-game tutorials much, but make a huge impact on your game.

Worth looking through.

I felt I answered the question he asked.

He did not ask how can I play better. Or what the individual things mean, or anything really, he just asked how to read the city menu, which is well what I was trying to show him.

if he has more questions yes, there are alot of things, watching someone who knows how to play, youtube if you don't have any friends. works I guess.

But I thought my picture of a city, well It could have had words written by me on it to improve it. I didn't want to tell him how to play, I just wanted to show him how to read the menu.

Since I find it rude to tell a person how to play his game when he doesn't ask that.

I will add buildings that provide bonuses like a granaries +2 food increase the food production of the city tile. I think maritime city states work the same way, so it should all be on the map from what I have shown.

there is also a few policy and building bonuses there giving me +% to things.

theres a factory a power plant, a workshop, a windmill and a golden age providing production bonuses. etc. pretty sure everything available up to that point have been built in the city.

Or, conversely, you can make suggestions as to where new players can find a variety of resources and visual aids that will help their game play.

It's what I did. I found it immensely useful and I thought I'd share.

Trying to give others suggestions on tools they can use to improve their game and get a better feel for CiVs mechanics isn't rude. Insulting people who are trying to help others IS.

I doubt even you know what you meant by those words.

but I guess whats important is if the person you were talking to understood them. you could be a parrot for all that matters.

but I'm not seeing any meaning behind them. are you just reading from something and repeating it?

You've posted in every thread on this forum and are extremely condescending on others- this very thread for example.

You're not as good at the game as you suggest, and even if you were- it doesn't give you the right to come down on someone else suggesting someone other than you. Ggrondin in this case.

Your attack on him is obvious that you took it as a sleight in that your answer wasn't 'good enough'- case in point: I felt I answered the question he asked.

So what? Who cares? This is a forum- for discussion and sharing ideas. Not a case of 'ask a question, have red answer it and no one else contribute'

You're on a small forum with little activity, and take offense easily when your position is questioned. You're being the 'big fish' (Top expert) in a 'small pond' (this forum).

Considering you're hardly infallible- (Liberty is the 'weakest tree' for example) it's little wonder you're lurking around GameFaqs instead of contributing to the discussions on CivFanatics.

Well...this was the kind of thread I was looking for and between the hurt feelings I found what I needed.

Youtube videos which I looked up MasterCiv5, BUT even if it wasn't the right name it lead me to the guy you wanted to recommend anyways. It is MisterCiv5 sorted from oldest to newest on his video page:

http://www.youtube.com/user/MisterCiv5/videos?sort=da&view=0

and the mention of "CivFantics", which was the website I couldn't remember from when I played Civ IV as the recommended source of Civ V info.

http://www.civfanatics.com/civ5

Even though I could still play Civ IV and I used a lot of "Auto" stuff in that game I am determined to actually learn how to manage my cities in this one unlike my laziness in Civ IV. This aspect of the game is definitely not well explained within the game universe itself.
