Multiplier in Manager Mode

Does anyone have any idea what this is or how to get it past x1?

I've never tested it, but I recall someone posting here once that the multiplier is higher if you're playing as a pretty bad team, and you beat a superior team. In other words, if you pick a team like Manchester United you'll never get a multiplier over 1 because you're considered one of the top tier teams.
