Is there somewhere in the game to check the 2? In GW1 or other games whenever I'd start lagging there'd be an icon that turns orange or red, that also showed the FPS. Anything of the sort in GW2?

There is but it was disabled for the current beta weekend. I guess they didn't want evidence of the plague of framerate issues to be easily displayed in screenshots. (In before "I don't have framerate issues, the problem must not exist!!1")

If they ever re-enable it, to use it put -perf at the end of the "Target:" section of a shortcut, ie:
"C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2\Gw2.exe" -perf
