Full article on Ascended loot is now up

If people actually read the article they would have no reason to fear. The stat increase is a couple of points. A 5 point difference between the Ascended and the Exotic ring show in the article. It will neither be game changing nor necessary. What makes the Ascended item special is the inclusion of a unique kind of upgrade slot. The infusions will work just like they did in the first game, only we wont be getting it all at once. We will have to work for our infusions.

They will never raise the level cap, and when they want to make the enemies stronger they will just add a new infusion which will just make us more resistant to the agony of their attacks, but wont give us any advantage against other enemies. Further more, because this will be a requirement, it will be much easier to obtain than the legendary items.

A 5 point difference is equivalent to an 8% boost, equivalent to the difference between Fine and Masterwork, or between Masterwork and Rare. It is NOT insignificant.

Why even bother with adding a tier? Why not just add an Infusion slot to all gear?

No ones talking about the stat difference. We're talking about the infusion thing. Did you miss the part where it says you will flat out die if you dont have it at some point?

Not to mention in the example the difference is 5 power, 5 precision, AND 3% MF. How much more crit damage will the berserker version have? Sounds like a definite upgrade/advantage to me. Also legendary weapons will do more damage now.

Bottom line, it's new gear everyone will have to get. ANet flat out admits in the article they're catering to the small but vocal minority that rushed through content, and are now bored. Congrats, GW2 is now like every other MMO out there.

Considering you can't gem this new gear to the stats you want, people will only use it for dungeons that have 'agony'. Everything else will be done in exotics when you can have the stats you want for your builds.

Yeah, I'm sure everyone's going to take off their Legendaries when they go into WvW.

Not legendaries, the ascended ones.

You must have missed the part where all Legendaries now have Ascended-level stats.

...You must have missed this important little key note of the article:
"So fear not, all existing Legendary weapons, which are currently on par with Exotics, will be upgraded to be on par with Ascended weapons at the same time that we add Ascended weapons to the game. "

They aren't being upgraded this patch. They aren't being touched until they actually add ascended weapons to the game, which could be months from now. They're also changing some of the ways you acquire your Legendary Weapon to make it less difficult. Not to mention that you won't actually NEED a Legendary Weapon, as Ascended Weapons will have the same stats (they aren't the same thing).

And again, you're looking at a power greep of less than 5% combined if you have a character in full ascended gear. The difference between the Exotic Rings and Ascended Rings is literally 2 points.

The main purpose of Ascended Gear is to gain Infusion so you can go deeper into the Fractals of the Mists Dungeon, as Anet stated that right now, there will be a solid brick wall that won't be passable inside until you gain X amount of Infusion.

It's likely this is how things will play out in the future as well. Assuming future dungeons don't use this Rogue Like style of randomization in them, some Explorable Modes will be blocked off until you have X amount of Infusion gained from the Fractals of the Mists or the other Explorable Paths in Future Dungeon #2.

It's a very light form of gating content and linear progression to keep people from burning through the content too fast. It's no where near as obnoxious as Radiance was in Lotro or Resistance Checks were in Early WoW. But it is there as a design to keep people from doing everything in one day and then having nothing to do.

And once again: It's going to make no damned visible difference in WvW, since you already have people sub-level 80 running around in low level blue gear anyways. And if it does become a problem, they'll likely just make the entire WvW map scale your gear and stats to an equalized level like in Structured PvP.

Again: Why are people acting like this is something terrible? It's more content that will progress your character. It's what both parties wanted.

So if the game is about skill over gear, then shouldn't you just be able to get through Fractals with no infused gear and just dodging attacks alone, or be able to beat players who are only have an 8% stat advantage with good play anyways?

If thats the case, then what exactly is so game breaking about a new tier of gear? If you feel that you need it to make it through the new content, doesn't that defeat the purpose of not being a "Hotkey/auto-attack MMO" like WoW?

I think I might skip out on Ascended for most of my toons. For all intents and purposes, exotic is enough.

The Fractals doesn't work like that. There is no "Getting through" it, as there's no actual end. It works like an Endless Mode dungeon in a Rogue Like or similar random dungeon-style RPG.

You go in, you clear a "Floor" (made up of 3 mini-dungeons), and you move down to the next floor, which is harder than the last but gives greater rewards for completion. Every even floor also has a unique boss fight, which is likely where the Infusion part comes into play.

You'll NEED a certain amount of Infusion to get further into the dungeon in the lower floors, as Anet said the mobs and bosses will start using Agony at a much higher and stronger rate. And because it cant be dispelled by regular means, it'll require you to have some kind of resistance to it.

But you are correct in the WvW aspect. People with ascended gear will have very little advantage over those without it. The difference between a low level player in blue quality gear fighting a level 80 in exotic gear is a bigger difference than two 80s going at it, one in Exotic, and the other in Ascended.

But the game isn't balanced around 1v1 in WvW anyways so all of that's a moot point.

They said it was inevitable.

Our desire is to create a game that is more inclusive for hardcore and casual players alike, but we donít want to overlook the basic need for players to feel like they are progressing and growing even after hitting max level. Adding item progression is a delicate process normally undertaken in an expansion, but we feel itís important to strive to satisfy the basic needs of our players sooner rather than later

So don't try to blame the "small but vocal minority."
