An Augment guide for those who always want more *SPOILERS*

#1GauRocksPosted 7/29/2008 7:16:27 PMmessage detail
I would like to point out first that this is by no means perfect. I'm convinced that it's better than SBAllen's method while still maxing stats, but it also requires a lot of patience. Basically, you're wasting a lot of augments that are useful when you get them and worthless in the endgame, which, while it gives you a better endgame, will make things harder on you until then. The main reason why you would want to use the SBAllen method is because this method requires that you get Gil Farmer before Cid leaves the party on your first playthrough. I also didn't think too much about which playthrough things should be given in, so some of those choices may be pretty bad. The advantages include more copies of a few useful augments, more augments overall thanks to getting Cid's on the first run, and a more damage efficient use of your Limit Break augment (Cecil instead of Kain, for Twincasted Ultima and more frequent damage). A big thanks to SBAllen, as his guide and format were the basic framework for this, and thanks also to anyone who contributed discussion or information on damage numbers.

I'll follow this list up with an Augment by Augment explanation of why things are the way they are, and then feel free to comment on any mistakes, omissions, or things that could be done even better. If you notice an augment given away to someone different in the guide than in the explanations, be sure to point it out and I'll clarify. The last post will contain updated level up tables, and it would be nice if nobody posted before that.

Guide begins next post due to character limits.

Explanations begin next post.
#3GauRocks(Topic Creator)Posted 7/29/2008 7:18:19 PMmessage detail
!Auto-Potion: Give to Rosa, Rydia.
Rydia needs it to max stats. These two are the ones with the lowest health. Everyone's equal later. May as well be on these two. Extra goes to Porom because you want to keep Counter and you want Dualcast.

!Item Lore: Give to Kain, Edge.
Using the Limit Break setup here, these two are the ones with lowest damage output. Rosa is lower if not using Ultima, but she's also got healing spells of her own. These two also get Salve for the same reason. Extra goes to Palom because you want to keep Counter and you want Dualcast.

-Counter: Give to Rydia, Edge, Cecil.
Kain will be jumping, and Rosa doesn't have a consistent strong option to counter with. Also, these characters get Draw Attacks because it makes so much sense with Counter.

!Curse: Give to Cecil, Edge.
It's not as useful as Cry because of the MP cost, but it's got a similar effect, so the two who don't have Cry get this. Extra goes to Palom because you want to keep Counter and you want Dualcast.

-Tsunami: Give to Edge, Cecil, Rosa.
Rosa and Edge use it to max stats. Cecil is weak for a while after becoming a Paladin, and the death effect on this can help make up for it a bit. It's also nice for him to have one multi target spell for the Dark Elf's cave, and this is the cheapest and most likely to kill things.

!Twincast: Give to all.
Doesn't really need explaining. You don't really need them anywhere else. Extra goes to Tellah because he's better at using it than Cid.

!Bluff: Give to Edge, Rydia.
These two have magic that uses Intelligence. Might as well give it to them. Useless when at max stats. Extra goes on Tellah because with his low MP, he can actually get a benefit out of it.

-Cry: Give to Rydia, Rosa, Kain.
Since it only lowers Defense, Rydia and Rosa can use it to help out physical characters in fights where magic is less effective. The last one is up to you, but I picked Kain so he'd have a good way to buff the party that didn't need MP. If you change it, you may want to put Curse on the other two just in case.

-Dualcast: Give to Edge, Rydia, Rosa.
Rydia and Rosa have the best spell selection. Cecil will generally be doing other things, but dual Ninjitsu could have some utility.

!Gil Farmer: Give to Cecil, Rydia.
Cecil's always with you. The other character to get it is up to you, but I prefer to split them up so one character doesn't end up using all the effects. The extra goes on Cid, because extras of this are excessive. Yes, that's a lot of grinding for cash the first time through, I know, but it's possible.

!Bardsong: Give to Edge, Rosa.
Cecil and Rydia are using Limit Break. Rosa is the traditional character for buffing your party. The other one is up to you, but Edge tends to output less damage. Extra goes on Cid, because he can use it fairly well and it gives you a third Adrenaline. You can replace it with Cecil's Tsunami if you'd rather have one on someone else.

!Salve: Give to Rydia, Edge.
See Item Lore. Extra doesn't exist because you want Dualcast more.

!Hide: Give to Rosa, Edge.
Kain can Jump to avoid damage. Cecil and Rydia should be more concerned with dealing damage. Extra doesn't exist because you want dualcast more.

!Recall: Give to Kain, Rosa.
These two don't get black magic, just in case you ever want to use it. Kain over Cecil because Cecil has Limit Break and therefore even less reason to be messing around with Recall. Extra goes on Yang because the skill is honestly worthless.

!Last Stand: Give to Rosa, Edge.
Edge needs it to max stats. On Rosa, it can keep her alive one more turn to heal. Cecil is also an option here, but I think he has enough other things he can be doing. Extra goes on Yang because it's the least important thing you have left.

-Fast Talker: Give to Cecil, Rosa, Rydia.
Rosa and Rydia are the mages. Both casters need Fast Talker for Twincast to be faster, so Cecil gets the third.

-Whirlwind: Give to Kain, Rosa, Edge.
All three use it for maxing stats.

-Draw Attacks: Give to Rydia, Edge, Cecil.
See Counter.

-Reach: Give to Rydia, Cecil, Edge.
Kain's Jump and Rosa's arrows don't care about row.

!Analyze: Give to Edge, Cecil.
Cecils always around, and Edge generally has the least to do. Extra goes on FuSoYa because there's really no need for one, let around three.

-Adrenaline: Give to Rydia, Cecil, Edge.
Limit Breakers get more damage potential. Last one is up to you, but Edge is probably going to take more damage (and get more use out of this) than Kain.

-Upgrade: Give to Rydia, Cecil, Kain.
Limit Breakers get more damage potential. Just in case Rydia needs to go physical for a fight or two. Kain might want to hit an elemental weakness.

!MP+50%: Give to Rosa, Rydia.
These are worthless no matter where they go, since stat maxing makes them obsolete. More MP on mages early on is nice, though. Extra goes on FuSoYa because he's a mage and your main party doesn't need it.

-Inferno: Give to Kain, Rydia, Rosa.
Rydia and Rosa use it to max stats. The other slot is up to you, but I felt like Kain was getting neglected and it technically combos with Whirlwind.

-Darkness: Give to Rydia, Kain, Cecil.
Limit Breakers get more damage potential. Kain needs health less than Edge, although it's really up to you between the two,.

-Focus: Give to Edge, Rydia, Cecil.
Limit Breakers get more damage potential. Edge stands around more than Kain, so this one makes a bit more sense on him than Darkness. Up to you, though.

-Kick: Give to Kain, Edge, Cecil.
They're the physical attackers. Not much more to say here.

-Brace: Give to Rydia, Rosa, Cecil.
Cecil uses Brace well with Cover. Others are up to you, but I chose the mages because they tend to end up defending more often than physical characters.

!Level Lust: Give to Rosa, Cecil.
More than one is excessive, and Cecil's always with you. The other character to get it is up to you, but I prefer to split them up so one character doesn't end up using all the effects. Extra goes on Edward because it's expendible.

!HP+50%: Give to Rydia, Rosa.
These are wasted no matter where they go, since stat maxing makes them obsolete. Mages tend to have less HP, so they're more likely to benefit early on. Extra goes on Edward because he might use it, and nobody in your final party cares.

-Piercing Magic: Give to Cecil, Rosa, Rydia.
Cures going through reflect is very important. Your main offensive mage is also important. Not really much to argue about here.

-Bless: Give to Kain, Rosa, Edge.
Rosa and Edge are your main support characters, and Kain is the one left without a Limit Break.

-Omnicasting: Give to Cecil, Rydia, Rosa.
Most of Edge's spells are already multi-target. These three are obvious, especially since Cecil uses it to max stats.

-Phoenix: Give to Edge, Rydia, Kain.
Kain and Edge need it for maxing stats. Rosa has a healing spell already. It's up to you, but I think it's more useful on a back row character than Cecil.

-Treasure Hunter: Give to Cecil.
He's always with you.

-Eye Gouge: Give to Rosa.
This one's totally up to you, but I gave it to Rosa because she's generally the one supporting the party and this is a support skill.

-???'s Love: Give to Kain.
He needs it to max stats.

-Safe Travel: Give to Cecil.
He's always with you

-Limit Break: Give to Rydia, Cecil.
They need it to max stats. For some discussion on why these two over Kain, see http://boards.gamefaqs.com/gfaqs/genmessage.php?board=939425&topic=44561492

Man, are you barking up the wrong tree. My mod account on LL has been suspended for months, the alt that I'm using is suspended for another 40 minutes or so, and I don't have ban/unban permissions on my main account anyway.

IM me or something if you'd like to ask why I'm suspended, I don't feel like going into it here.

On first playthrough I would swap Brace and Level Lust, just because it would make things a lot faster on subsequent playthroughs and aside from Cecil (who can get it on the 2nd playthrough), it's pretty useless.

Um, not to criticize science or anything, but wouldn't it be easier just to call it "the pink one"?

This is true, and it's a matter of preference. My logic there is that I might possibly use Brace, but I know there's no chance I'm going to use more than one Level Lust in the end. If you're less obsessed about endgame options than I am, that works just as well.

I just realized where I got the idea to put Bardsong on Cid in the first place.

That's pretty much what got me started on this whole list, so credit to everyone who posted there.
