Weak Mode Set-Up

#1DarkSamurai21Posted 10/12/2012 2:50:13 AM
Heya, bout to tackle trial mode and when I finish that I wanted to try out all the job classes I didn't use in my first play through,
In my first run I have Sam, WM, BM, Hunter, Archer, Monk.

Then I thought, I really haven't been challenged at all in this run, mine as well go for weak mode when I unlock it. I'm wondering if the below party set-up would work, (I just want to beat the game.. If i could craft the Tournesoul and grab a zodiac spear from the hunt club I'd be super thrilled... Maybe get a couple optional espers, if they are possible?)

WEAK MODE

Knight - Ashe - Belias (Potion Lore 1) / Mateus (Esuna, cleanse, curaga, regen) / Hashmal (White Magic 8, 9) /
* Ultima (telekinesis, battle lore)

Breaker - Basch

Time Mage - Penelo - Adrammelech (Cura, Raise) /
*Zalera (Ether Lore 3)

-------------------------------------

Uhlan - Balthier - -
* Chaos ( Bio, blindga, aeroga, silencega)

Machinist - Vann - Exodus (Decoy+Oil), Famfrit (Time Magic 8, 9, 10) /
*Zodiark (+390 Hp)

Red Mage - Fran - Shemhazai (Esuna, Cleanse) /
*Cuchulainn (Firaga, Thundaga, Blizzaga, Sleepga) / Zeromus (Channeling)

I put stars next to the espers I'm not sure are attainable.

I heard machinist is valuable, so that's on there, but not sure if there are any *musts* for weak mode.

1) Guns are pretty much the only easy way to damage anything beyond certain point in the game,
[It is possible to solo Weak Mode with Machinist FYI]
so you'll be seeing your Machinist A LOT

2) I'd personally switch TM from Penelo(to Fran?) cos' she has prolonged crossbows animation,
which is not very good(especially at weak mode)

3) Most of the attacking stuff unlocked by Espers will be useless in weak mode
so don't expect much...still, giving Chaos to Uhlan seems like a BIG waste
I'd better have more HPs for Machinist or TM.

Oh whoops, I thought Balthier and Fran had the prolonged ranged weapons, roger that and good thing I asked, so Fran Time Mage, Penelo Red Mage, and Chaos I'll switch up, that Esper list was half put together before I decided on weak mode so there are some bad choices for sure. Thanks again.

Balthier has a delay with all ranged weapons but Handbombs, for Fran it's Bows and for Penelo, Crossbows and Guns.

If that's the case.. Would it be more practical to get multiple machinists?
Like make Fran or Basch into one?

Does anything else come in handy besides machinists?

If guns are the way to go, what about a hunter with Shemhazai?

I'm thinking:

Knight - Balthier - Belias (Potion Lore 1) / Mateus (Esuna, cleanse, curaga, regen) / Hashmal (White Magic 8, 9) /
* Ultima (telekinesis, battle lore)

Hunter - Basch - Shemhazai (Guns 5, 6,)

Time Mage - Ashe - Adrammelech (Cura, Raise) /
*Zalera (Ether Lore 3)

-------------------------------------

Breaker - Fran

Machinist - Vann - Exodus (Decoy+Oil), Famfrit (Time Magic 8, 9, 10) /
*Zodiark (+390 Hp)* Chaos (+350 Hp)

Red Mage - Penelo -
*Cuchulainn (Firaga, Thundaga, Blizzaga, Sleepga) / Zeromus (Channeling)

Then I have guns in both parties after Shemhazai. Or two in one if need be.

Not too attached to Breaker: Fran though, do I need breaks or can I make her an Uhlan?
(I really just want to get a zodiac spear (hunt club?), a tournesoul and beat the game on this run)

1) On Breaker - Depends on weather you'll go for all optional stuff or not,
but I'd defly want someone with breaks(to lower foes attack/mag.attack)
+
Neither Uhlan nor Breaker would be able to really hurt anything after certain point without Espers,
so consider overall utility of the job above all

2) On multi gunners - Sure, why not. It's all about providing them all with decent weapons
(which is kinda PITA without RNG usage)
+
Hunter with guns is not a bad decision IMO.
Hunter is fast
+ decent HPs
+ he can tank vs regular enemies(those who don't have "Ignore EVA" ability)
+ against bosses he gunplay a bit

3) As for anything else - Espers finally can be useful here(Now who would have thought!)

Thanks again man, you've helped me so much,
Just one thing,

But then later:

What espers would I give the Uhlan besides Chaos? And all I see for the Breaker is one swiftness from Ultima (but thought I should get Telekenises on the knight since they have no way to hit flying) and the rest magic lores.. (for shades of black?) I think I'm gonna go breaker for the breaks, that'll be more useful than the Uhlans spears won't it?
What determines a breaks success?

Ah or I could do Cuchulainn and Ultima to the Uhlan for half the breaks, and Zeromus to the TM for the other, wonder if that might not be too late though, and is it worth losing channeling and the 3rd tier black magic in the RM.

I also said that it's probly better to give Chaos to Machinist or TM for HPs

As for usefulness of Espers you can check Esper Guide to the original game:

http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps2/459841-final-fantasy-xii/faqs/46306

lotsa useful info on Espers there.
Keep in mind that IZJS allows you to actually control your summoned partners,
which drastically increases their usefulness for that matter.

In particular Shemah, Exodus and Zeromus are good to start many tough fights
especially Zeromus, cos' damage of his Final Attack-Big Bang =
(His Max HP - His Current HP) x5

So if you summon him before engaging the fight, Bubble him, then put his health at critical
(the less HPs he'd have the more damage he'll do) with the help of Niho + Potions/X-Potions/etc
most of the marks and bosses(except for the ones with good HP pool) will be wiped out instantly

Shemah and Exodus can do some damage too, but the thing is - they are kinda random at that
still have their uses early on though

Cuchulainn is the best Esper for tanking cos' his Drain allows him to survive on his own
with MUCH better rate than any other Esper who almost always need to be buffed and healed to stay alive

Zodiark has his "insta 50 000 damage no matter what" attack of course, but you need to get him first...

I'd defly give Ultima to Breaker, speed is of the essence in weak mode
By the time you'll get her your Knight may be good only for tanking and Knot of Rust using
(btw you'll be farming these ...plenty of them, cos' they are the best way to finish tough fights until the late game)

Shemah to Hunter(if you'd decide to pick him) for guns

Uhlan will be your prime Phoenix Dawn user when needed, and probly Item user in general
after Hunter will get Shemah(if you'd decide to pick him)

I'd say this will be a sacrifice... and an unnecessary one

and is it worth losing channeling and the 3rd tier black magic in the RM.

You'll find that many things that worked in normal game will become irrelevant very fast here.
You will see it yourself, just don't forget to save before attaching your new acquired Esper to someone
so you can check the results and if anything to reload the game and fix your choice

EDIT: just in case you haven't seen this great vid by Infiny:

I thought it might help
