Star Ocean: First Departure

I need to know if the game's very first boss battle in Kratus against Baird actually counts as a boss battle. The music in that battle is the same you hear in random encounters. I need to know if it's a real boss battle so I'll know if Roddick/Millie gains an affection point for Millie/Roddick.
