Want to try this DLC but am starting a new character. What level before I should do this?

Minimum 10, perhaps. You need some Melee and Small Guns leveling to survive both against Trogs and the Arena.

I think I did it as early as level 10 to 12 on average difficulty and could have been done it a little earlier. I'm a stealthy, patient player.

Melee is required? I've never used melee since there are so many awesome guns.

Aren't the Auto Axe and Nail Board melee weapons? Before one finishes the first jail combat, that's pretty much the only weapons you have at disposal I believe.

Maybe I am misremembering. But, I think the first time you are exposed to enemies (ones that are red) is in the steel yard. On entering the steel yard, an assault rifle is provided next to a dead body.

Right, but I can see why one would think you have to have melee. Wernher cautions you so strongly that it's easy to be confused as to whether or not you should even take a gun out once you enter the Pitt. The first time I did it I just went in guns blazing.
