There are tons of used cars, some of them can be bought new, some seem rare and some seem like junk. I am just starting off so I have no idea what I want, and I am sure as soon as I figure out what I want I will have seen these cars come and go and kick myself.
The only one I have heard of is the impreza 22b that everyone is crazy about, there has to be a definitive list somewhere that will provide help.
mygranturismo.net lists all 1000 cars. Really, it depends on what you're after. What type of cars do you like to drive? What cars have you owned? What cars do you like to look at? Are you interested in cars that nobody else has got? All of those questions are your personal preference, so I can't help you that much.
However, the 2J will come in handy later in the game. I'd recommend stuff like the LMPs, although you may not have the money for those just yet. Recently I've been collecting a few rally cars, and some of the more obscure ones. I've still never seen the ZZII...
True. The 2J is a must but Dark Doc has forgot to mention you need 15million credits and the car is rare. You won't be getting it too early in the game. Another must have car is the FGT. You may want to check the event lists first to see what other cars you will need. If you google prize cars for gt5 you will see cars you may not have to buy. Ultimatey I have to agree, we need to know more about your interests. The most I can tell you are my buying habits (start buying all cars above 5040k credits and spot for rare cars. Finally the OCD highlights rare and useful cars (japanes concepts, jgtc and FGT this time round).
A man's three most important questions: How much, How often and When?
i generally keep an eye out for the cars with super low mileage (300km or lower... in that range) that you cant win or buy from dealership. its always nice to check on those in the used lot. you never know what some person may be iso and you happen to have it with super low mileage.
speaking of this... keep an eye out for any lotus elise with super low miles that can't be bought from the dealership. id be interested in them. any color.

thanks guys, im usually not that reat at racing games, so I like cars that handle well, cars that are better than their dealership counterparts basically.
there are too many different lancers and imprezas and skylines and I have no idea which would suit me best.
I have owned a number of cars, but none I ever truely wanted. A maxima sport, classic 71 death proof nova, caddy SLS, none of that matters. I need the edge over those annoying cpus because I hate losing a race only because I am not fast enough, but wondering which year of a car to buy when they are all about the same price is mind boggling to me, looks don't really matter.
OK, fair enough. So you basically want to be able to win A-spec races? One way to do that is to look at the list of typical opponents - these will be listed with the best ones at the top, so you can see what you are up against and pick that.
General tips, use lighter cars, and ones with 4WD. Many of the races don't have very restrictive rules. On the whole, you don't need to buy a huge amount of cars to win (it's possible to complete the game only buying 4 or 5 cars, I presume you've seen the FAQ on that) Even without being a great player, you should be able to get quite far using only prize cars, and customize your car collection to your tastes. Another tip is to keep 4 million in reserve, in case something comes up that really takes your fancy.
I wouldn't worry about all the different Lancers, etc. Sometimes there isn't much of a difference between years (maybe one has 5 horsepower more, or the headlights are a different shape, or you can get it in different colors, etc). I like Subarus - you can go for the ones with best power/weight ratio, but be careful, because some of them cannot accept rally tyres.
