Question: I was trying to get 3 star ranks in all cups using the wii wheel so I played the 100cc Star cup. I raced nearly perfectly and I was on manual and I did all the tricks and stuff that is in the FAQ. Then I realized something; at the end of Koopa cape I drifted and turbo boosted off the track. Does falling off the track AFTER you finish affect star rank?

The innermost machinations of my mind are an enigma.

Just got 2 stars on the Flower cup with 53 points and with falling off the track once on my Gamecube/manual license. I used Birdo/Mach Bike for that cup.
I was Blue-shelled and fell off the track in Wario's Goldmine, Got 4th.

So yeah, it's possible to get 2 stars with 53 points. But ofcourse 100% sure you could've get 3 stars if you had 60.
It was a waste.

@shoshonte, I don't know, but I tell you after finish I fall off the track on purpose for fun XD.

I just completed the 3 star rank on all grand prix's. From my experience, what really matters is the time you 're going to finish the course. For example on Yoshi Falls anything between 1:10-1:18 is considered a candidate for a 3 star rank.

Another thing that counts seems to be the stability throughout your racing. It won't matter if you step on a banana or bump a wall once or twice, as long as you 're constantly first dominating all 4 courses per grand prix.

Lol, totally screwed up at N64 Bowser's Castle, hitting almost every Thwomp because the game sends you 2 Thwomps in the beginning. Happened to me all 3 laps.
Then, I luckily kept up easily as they get raped by the fire at the end.

Still got 3 stars. :D

dose the use of green shells and bannanas in first place effect star rank? cuz i did a near perfect prix race and got 2 stars... finnished every race half a lap or more ahead with no offroads or use of other items...

I learned something CRITICAL that undermines everyone's concept of getting 3 star. Nintendo ranks you based on following criteria:
1. Your point score (you must have 60 for 3 star)
2. You must make very few "critical errors" (getting hit by a course hazard of having Lakitu save you). Doing 3 or more is a sure fire way to land yourself a "2 star". I am not sure if I have had a run with 2 critical and I got 2 star.

You DON'T need to stay in first throughout a race. You DON'T need to avoid getting hit by rivals. You DON'T have to worry if you do a bit of accidental offroad. You DON'T even have to bother using items other than as a shield. What is ultimately much more important is having very good racing lines e.g. at least beat the "expert ghost" on all tracks (the less time you race the less likely you get hit by items) and being a very safe driver and avoid doing risky things (tricky shortcuts can land you a critical error if you fail them) all while placing first. Ideally players should be using a Mach Bike or a Bullet Bike due to their overall balance throughout the courses and their better acceleration vs Flame Runner (you WILL get hit).

So if I have no critical errors and I get 60 points even though I was pretty much only in first at the end of the 4 courses of a GP, I'll still get 3 stars? If that is correct, which it probably is, that explains why I got 3 stars on some GPs and not others. lol
