Disgaea 3 Stealing FAQ v1

BASICS

Stealing is a very critical part of Disgaea. The only way of obtaining certain items in the game is by stealing them from enemies. These enemies are usually located in the Item World and extra battle maps.

DIFFERENCES from previous Disgaeas

The ability to steal in Disgaea 3 got nerfed considerably. It is much harder to steal than in previous games. Some notable differences include:

* Thieves can no longer steal stats
* Steal is now based on the BASE HIT and SPD of that character
* Success of steal is also based on the enemy base HIT and SPD
* It is much harder for non thief class characters to steal.
* Equipment that thief thief wears no longer affects Steal Success Rate

HOW STEAL PERCENTAGE is Calculated?

* Its a simple percentage of your {[enemy (HIT + SPD) + (rank of Item to be stolen * rank multiplier)] / [thief (HIT+SPD)] + Direction + (rank of stealing item/HIT of stealing item)} 100

**The stats of the thief considered is HIT and SPD when UNEQUIPPED. Equipment that the thief wears to increase the steal success is NOT factored into this, and DOES NOT improve your chances of stealing.
**The rank of the stealing item is a combination of HIT from that item and the product rank.
**Stealing from behind an enemy will yield a higher rate of success than stealing from the front. Stealing from behind gives increases success by 6%, from the side increases success by 2%.
**The rank of steal item is based off HIT/Product Rank of that Item. Stealing hands generally have a bonus of 5% given the math (20 being the base HIT, 4 being the actual product rank)
**The rank of item to be stolen also affects the steal success rate, sometimes up to 100%.
**The stats of the enemy considered is HIT and SPD
**If the steal is done by a character that is not a thief class, the success rate is halved.
**The Rank Multiplier is 10 for normal, 20 for rare, and 30 for legendary.

There is a Margin of Error up to 5%.

Sample:
Level 19 thief, unequipped HIT+SPD = 260
Level 2 prinny, rare Cat Punch (rank 1), HIT+SPD = 46
Stealing item: Stealing Hand, HIT+20

Calculation (if stealing from front: [ (46+20) / 260 ] + 0 + (4/20) ]100 = 27.4%
Actual percentage in the game: 28%

CAN I IMPROVE STEAL CHANCES

The only way you can improve your chances of stealing is by leveling up that character. When reincarnating that character, put the bonuses into HIT and SPD equally. Also, make sure that your evilities have HIT and SPD stat boosts when that character levels.

It is in the best interest to level that character as a majin then reincarnate it as a thief.

Unlike the previous Disgaeas, equipment that the stealing character wears no longer affects the success rate of stealing. I pimped that same thief given in the example with gear that increased HIT+SPD to 506 and used the same Stealing Item in front of that same enemy for the same rare item, and still got a 28% success rate.

You can steal stats if you have the Heart Steal evility, btw.

eh, stealing is still pretty easy it seems

I nabbed the makai wars from baal (level 4000, stats over a million) with my genocider (level 44XX at the time, only stat over 100k being attack). everything on him was a 50% chance

* Thieves can no longer steal stats

No. As TheBarkode said, with the right evility, yes they can.

* Steal is now based on the BASE HIT and SPD of that character
* Success of steal is also based on the enemy base HIT and SPD

No. This is absolutely incorrect. Neither has anything to do with it. I don't know where you're getting this information.

* It is much harder for non thief class characters to steal.

No. The non-thief stealing formula is the same as in previous games.

* Equipment that thief thief wears no longer affects Steal Success Rate

No. It never mattered in the previous games.

* Its a simple percentage of your {[enemy (HIT + SPD) + (rank of Item to be stolen * rank multiplier)] / [thief (HIT+SPD)] + Direction + (rank of stealing item/HIT of stealing item)} 100

No. Definitely not. It sounds like something you just made up.

**The rank of the stealing item is a combination of HIT from that item and the product rank.

No. Items don't have an attribute called "Product Rank". Product Rank determines what you find in the shops. The same item can appear at multiple Product Ranks, which makes your statement ridiculous.

**Stealing from behind an enemy will yield a higher rate of success than stealing from the front. Stealing from behind gives increases success by 6%, from the side increases success by 2%.

No. You're right that there is a higher rate of success from the side or behind, but it's not as simple as 2% or 6%. There's more involved.

**The rank of steal item is based off HIT/Product Rank of that Item. Stealing hands generally have a bonus of 5% given the math (20 being the base HIT, 4 being the actual product rank)

No. Again, Product Rank has nothing to do with stealing.

**The stats of the enemy considered is HIT and SPD

No. This is entirely wrong.

**If the steal is done by a character that is not a thief class, the success rate is halved.

I'm surprised you got something right, lol.

**The Rank Multiplier is 10 for normal, 20 for rare, and 30 for legendary.

No. That's the Rarity Multiplier.

There is a Margin of Error up to 5%.

And what made you come to that conclusion? You're formula being wrong?

Honestly, this whole thing seems like a joke.

Replay_Style posted the formula from the Official Strategy Guide here:

yeah i did the calculations based from previous disgaeas and that level 19 thief should had closer to 100% steal rate of a rare cat claw on a level 2 prinny. but it only had a 28% if stealing from the front with a stealing hand, and 34% if stealing from behind.

its a lot of complicated math, and yes it seems like they added SPD to the mix because otherwise the numbers and the actual game percentages do not add up.
