What purpose does this shield have... at all?

To be a cursed shield, what else? But seriously though, it does seem odd to have it in this game. At least in DQ 8 you could use it in Alchemy to make a much better shield with no curse on it.

Drops your def to zero, raises your magics defences to the skies

Oh so it increases magic defense. Not very useful, unless you're fighting all magic users :\ Thanks for the answers.

It's actually useful for Metal killing when paired to Bladed Armor. If an enemy attacks them, 1/4 of the damage is reflected, and with 0 defense, it's usually enough for them to die in one hit

The older games usually didn't reveal that equipment was cursed until after you put it on. There may be some monsters unaffected by the curse, I'm remember someone saying that their slime knight wasn't affected by the double-edged sword's curse.

It's the Bladed Armor that reflects damage. The Ruined Shield drops your defense to 0 so you take more damage(in turn, doing more damage to the Metal monsters)

And it doesn't raise your magic defense. It actually makes attack spells do 20 extra damage to you.

If you want defense, it's completely useless. The one use is pretty much metal killing
