First level of HAWX (not the training mission) plays very similarly to Ace Combat 6. Flying around a city when it suddenly gets attacked; oh no! Destroy all the air and ground assets, paying special attention to the bombers. Once they're all destroyed, it's mission complete...OH WAIT! Enemy Aces incoming! Take them out! Mission complete!
Maybe I've just played Ace Combat too much, but does anyone else think it's relatively similar?

It's a decent formula to start off with. It's not just Ace Combat either, it's happened in Starlancer and Freelancer. Freespace 2 had the same thing, but no enemy aces.
Just about every Ace Combat game in the series had that same opening level. It's kinda standard I guess.
Well, in general you want the first level in any game to be a good mix of the different things you'll be doing in the game. That pretty much means "Shoot down planes and shoot ground targets". Bombers are always going to be high priority targets. They are in real life too. And aces are pretty much the "boss enemies" of the genre.
