I recently bought Hitman 2: Silent Assassin, Contracts and Blood Money for the PS2. I believe these were the only PS2 releases. Hitman: Codename 47 wasn't released for the ps2.
Is it okay to simply skip the first game? Or should I watch a playthrough on youtube, read up on the story?

Well, most of us don't have any choice anymore because 1 is so old. They addressed this by revisiting some levels later on.
I read the wiki myself. Good read. Love the story. --- In my spare time I like to waste time.

I swear there was a trilogy pack available for PC and the original xbox... However I just read the wiki.

I just read the wiki.
Contracts is pretty close to the original though, just without the storyline of the first. --- ||AMD Phenom II X4 965 BE @3.4GHZ || Asus M4A87TD/USB3|| CM960 II Advanced || 4GB || ATI RADEON 6670HD 1GB || Win7 64Bit GT: Plizmatic Pain

The original is fun, and actually a lot different than the hitman games that came after. If you can play it do so, if not its no big deal. Some major differences are that the map pauses the game and does not show the location of anyone (other than 47), there is no reward for a clean mission or penalties for a messy one (unless you kill cops or civilians) and there are some missions which are intended to involve you in the raging gun battles that in other games only happen when things go bad, and you have no way to sedate targets; your supposed to kill guards and then hide the bodies. Also no rating after a mission, instead it changes how much cash you earn and what weapons are available for next mission. --- Man who hesitates is not only lost but also miles from next exit

the original is terriffic, even though the controls can be a little cumbersome, and theres no auto saving to hold your hand throughout the game.
theres just some intangible way the game plays, makes it "feel" more viceral than others, on the consoles especially.
im sure you could find it cheap online. do it. do it now!

If you really don't want to skip it you can always grab it from GoG, it's 6 bucks there. --- The darkness must go down the river of night's dreaming

Finally started playing Hitman 2 the other day, just completed it. One of my favourite games of all time. Can't wait to start the others!

Personally, I never played the original, but I did play Blood Money, Contracts, and Silent Assassin. I've always wanted to play the original, but I have never gotten the chance to try it out.
