What Did I Do to Deserve This, My Lord!?

so i just watched the crazy awesome video of one guy dominating with just dragons. aside from that what is the best way to start the game?

what i do is

0X000X000X0X
0X0X0X0X0X0X
0X0X0X0X0X0X
000X000X000X

with 0 being dug blocks and with X being undug, so i tend to like to serpent around in many directions and all that. Once i get deep enough I make Runes and bring out the demons. Is this a decent strategy? I usually get around to round 5 or 6.

Also would any one have suggestions for how to make dragons using this method?
