Okami Questions and Answers V1.8

An update of my first FAQ containing corrections, additions, and such.
I've seen many others and I do have a very good idea on how to properly make one. I will try to cover every question (especially common ones) that I've seen on this board and hopefully everyone will find this to be of good use =) I'll do my best to keep it spoiler-free, if it's impossible, I'll mark them. And hopefully I can make this enjoyable to read with an appropriate joke here and there.
Constructed criticism is welcome, as well as comments. Nitpicking, as seen in the last thread, is welcome too as long as it’s flaming free >_>
Nitpicking helps me tons, I AM learning too…. Kinda >_>

So it doesn’t look ugly, I fixed the numbers, checked pretty much every single kind of spelling or grammar error. Probably still some there, but it should matter.

Use CTRL+F to find stuff quick.

(00) What is Okami?
(Quoted from my review)
Okami is an adventure game. Because of this some people tend to compare it to Zelda. And Like Zelda, this game does have dungeons, puzzles, and the like. However, Okami has a lot more feeling to it, which can be described as "unique", through the graphics, characters, and sometimes even the enemies. You play as a white wolf Amaterasu, who is a Japanese sun god. She is re-awakened by a Tree Sprite Sakuya, and then Amaterasu (Who I will now call "Ammy") is tasked with restoring the land of Nippon and ridding it of the re-awakened 8-headed dragon demon Orochi. Shortly after Ammy's revival, she is aided by a Poncle named Issun, who does all the talking to the NPC's and provides helpful advice.

(01) What are the differences between the PS2 and Wii versions?
+Paper filter is less noticeable
+Graphics in Wii version are more colorful (best I can describe it)
+Motion controls
+No credits...
+480p and widescreen

(02) Which version is better?
Pretty much the one you prefer. It's the same game, and they are both great. Since the PS2 version is hard to find, you can find the Wii version better. If you can deal with the motion controls (Not that hard at all) then get the Wii version. Though if you know for sure that you can't do the motion controls as well, you can try to get the PS2 version off Ebay maybe.

(03) Should I get this if I've played the PS2 version?
I know many of my friends (including myself) who have. It's well worth it IMO. If you liked the PS2 version a lot, I'd say go right ahead. But if you don't really care about the motion controls, don't worry about it. It's totally up to you though.

(04) How difficult is this game? How long?
You may have gotten the impression that this game is quite easy. That's only true if you spam items and Veil of Mist over and over... Otherwise, it's probably just right really. Some parts can get quite difficult, namely devil gates. It ran me 35 hours with no side-quests my first time, but I got to about 50 when I did them.

(05) What are the new controls?
Waggle the wii-mote to attack, this needs to be timed properly to work properly! Also, you can use the wii-mote to draw with the celestial brush. You can use Z to draw straight lines.

(06) I've heard about a lot of glitches...
Personally, I've never experienced a single one (I've played the game through the game TOO many times)
Though I'll tell you about some that people have seen, most are harmless.
Headless Ammy - Harmless, Ammy has no head
Suddenly falling through floors - uncommon, harmless as Ammy appears at the surface again after a bit
Sudden Freezing - I've had it happen to SSBB, but never this... It could be the Wii. I have no idea how to prevent it, so just save often!
Brush won't work - Only heard this twice, usually once you beat the battle it'll start working again.

(07) How do you get to full run speed faster?
Shake the wii-mote to do a tackle while running, will make Ammy start to run faster quicker.

(08) I can't draw straight lines! HALP!
You seen the instruction book? No? Well, use the Z button! That allows you to draw straight lines. Another method to do that is to press and Hold A then let go of it while still drawing the line (do this quickly), this will make sure there are no hooks at the end of the line. Remember, practice makes perfect (and more fun).

(09) Why won't Amaterasu attack properly?
You have to time your attacks accordingly. It's best to practice at the dojo, or in battle (Just avoid attacking enemies and their attacks). You just flick the wii-mote, wait until Ammy is just done attacking then flick it again. Though it's better if you go and practice for yourself, once you start to get it down it is actually quite fun to do.

(10) How do you fire Rosary weapons rapidly as a secondary weapon?
Make sure you don't have a Rosary equipped to secondary weapon that fires multiple shots at once (Shotgun style). When you have one that seems to fire just 1 bead, press the Z button then quickly followed by pressing the C button multiple times. With each time the C button is pushed, more beads will be shot quite rapidly.

(11) How can you use Glaives properly at all?!
I had a bit of trouble with this myself; I've never gotten down how to use it the way the game tells you (Basically, hold the wii-mote upwards for it to charge, then swing it down). I've found another (easier IMO) way to do it however (sure someone else has found this too though). Start your attack by shaking the wii-mote; this will cause the glaive to start charging its attack. Once you stop shaking, the glaive will attack. Start shaking again right after you stop charging the first attack to start charging the second attack, then stop shaking the wii-mote to attack again when you want. Rinse, lather, repeat. Then you have mastered glaives! Not to difficult, is it?

(12) Are there any miss-able Items?
I'll say this first: Everything important is NOT miss-able. Such as Stray beads, brush techniques. There IS one animal, it is a dog, it is in the area after Yoshpet forest (NOT Agata forest). There is also a monster, Fire Doom Mirror; he is miss-able in a dungeon when you are small. Just engage in battles to find him.

(13) Are there any one-time dungeons?
Yes.... Just like in the PS2 FAQ, I'll list the dungeons that are not 1 time only.
Tsuta Ruins, Gale Shrine, Sunken Ship, Catcall Tower, Yoshpet Forest (Not area after), and Wawku Shrine.

(14) Are treasures good for anything else besides selling?
No, sell them... NOW.

(15) If you drown in water, does it count as dying?
Nope, you just get some health taken away. So drowning doesn't count in deaths for the end-game rankings.

(16) Is it possible to get those treasure chests under the water?
Yes, once you find a way to walk on water, or can draw lily pads for the same effect. All you have to do is get above the chests, then powerslash them. The treasures inside will float up to the top.

(17) What happens when I get all stray beads?
You get an artifact that gives you 10 times the attack power, infinite ink, and invincibility. This only works on New Game +.

(18) How do I use the Astral pouch?
You don't, it uses itself (as long as you have it at 200 points of food in it) when you die. You can get a total of four via praise. So if they are all full, you can die 4 times before you actually can die.

(19) What's up with those statues in Shinshu fields...?
You make offerings to them, to make an offering you need a vase from the Nameless main in Shinshu fields. You can do that after you beat the demon gate near his house. You can then get a vase from him to take to one of the statues for praise. Sometimes you have to progress further in the story to do this, the last one is right before the last part of the game..

(20) Why is there a skull/red/yellow/green sticker-thing at the corner of my screen?
That is Ammy's god-hood. It keeps you from getting hurt in battle.
The below list explains about each level.
Green: You can take 3 hits without getting hurt. Changes to yellow after getting hit.
Yellow: You can take 2 hits without getting hurt. Changes to red after getting hit.
Red: You can take 1 more hit without getting hurt. Changes to null (no picture) after getting hit.
Null: You can get hurt when you get hit.
Skull: You can only get skull if you run away from battle or falling in miasma while you have Null status. (Credit to AzNsHaDoW553 for that accurate description)

(21) I can't find the monsters on the wanted list! And they re-spawned for like the fifth time!
Lagoona has a nice map: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/file/943732/47996
And make sure you don't leave the area before getting them all! As they'll re-spawn!

(22) Where are all the wanted lists?
Shinshu Fields: You can get it from the man inside of the house near the path to the moon cave.
Kusa Village: Go upstairs in the Inn; bash the door at the end of the hallway. Exit the Inn, and go back in. Go upstairs again and enter the room on the right and talk to Haruka.
Sei-an Commoner’s Quarter: Talk to Masu AT NIGHT in the restaurant.
Kamui: Simply go to the house near the frozen pond/lake and talk to Wali.

(23) Where can I get gold dust to upgrade my weapons?
4 for completing wanted lists (See above).
2 at Agata Forest item shop.
2 at Kusa Village's shop
2 at Sei-an's Weapon shop
2 at Wep'keer's shop
Beating Blockhead Grande
There are two just after the point-of-no-return as well... So I suggest not using gold dust on your first 2 weapons you get.

(24) Mr. Orange's dance, I can't do it! Help?
A lot of people had problems with this one. I'll put my advice below....
Keep the B button held down!
You have enough time to carefully draw a circle; don't go crazy slow, but at a good pace to draw the circle... But I think going faster is better (For me anyways)
If that doesn't work, practice drawing circles around the villagers, if it works, they'll run towards Ammy and pet her.

(25) Where are all the dojos located?
Shinshu field (Not hard to miss).
Ryoshima coast, on an island a bit off from the mainland (you NEED to go here)
Kamui, it's in the south-east corner (Just look at your map)

(26) Why can't I dig in certain places where there is a glow-spot?
Because you need a dojo technique, digging champ. Available at Ryoshima coast

(27) What are all the techniques I can learn?
LinkGanonSlayer has an FAQ on this here: http://www.gamefaqs.com/console/wii/file/943732/45623
Credit goes to him.

(28) What about those piles of leaves?
Progress in the story, when you can use wind via the celestial brush you can blow them away.

(29)I can't cut a rock!
That's because you need to upgrade the Powerslash.

(30) Upgrading brush techniques? Where?
At divine springs, when you get to one, donate the maximum amount of yen 3 times to get the upgrade.

(31) .... Divine spring?
Underground springs that are all across Nippon.

(32) What good is the cherry bomb upgrade for?
Mostly getting praise from certain side-quests. And for getting a Stray Bead.

(33) How come I can't beat Ida!? He disappears when I get too far ahead!
I was stumped on this for awhile, you don't outrun him! You have to bash him with your head.

(34) Tips on fishing?
Not much, besides how to do it. Just draw a line (doesn't have to be straight) from the tip of the fishing rod to a fish. Tilt the control stick in the opposite direction the fish is going and make sure the gauge doesn't go into the red! When the fish flies out of the water, powerslash it.

(35) I saw that bear again, where are the objects that you need to give him?
From side-quests FAQ by Mookiethebold
Cabbage: It's the big green ball near the top of the small set of stairs that lead to the beach. There's also a demon scroll near it.
Walnut: Clear the devil gate on the shore a bit in front of the merchant.
Beehive: Hanging from a tree branch slightly east of where the walnut was.
((Much thanks to Mookiethebold for this!))

(36) Is it possible to beat Bingo's digging game? Probably not...
Keep him to the right side, DO NOT drop him otherwise. You can check the other FAQs for further help.

(37) How come I can't drag that scary old lady into the moon-light?
Comeback after you progressed further into the game. Namely gotten the canine warriors IN Kusa village and went to Sasa sanctuary.

(38) At the gale shrine, I'm stuck in a circular room with symbols, what do I do?
Draw a bomb on the middle symbol (symbol kinda looks like a bomb).

(39) I can't get through _____. Did I miss a technique?
All required brush techniques to advance the main story-line are acquired through the story line, just keep going.

(40) I rang the bell in moon cave... But nothing is happening.
Did you get all the ingredients? Once you do, hit the bell multiple times.

(41) I can't get a stray bead!
You may have to come back later when you have a certain artifact or brush technique.

(42) An enemy keeps blocking my attacks with it's umbrella, it's impossible to beat!
Blow the umbrella away with wind (Hint hint).

(43) Where is that guy's pet at?
Face the two guards at the gate that leads to Sei-an city, then go right to the ledge. His pet is a black and white bunny, feed it, then take it too him (Be sure to beat the demon gate there though).

(44) Where is the thief guy everyone is talking about?
In a rock, just right of the entrance a little ways away from the corner, this is near the guard talking about him.

(45) I can't catch the thief again! He says something about needing something shocking...
Progress through the story, come back again later.

(46) What's with the ghost at night in Sei-an? Is he for a side-quest?
Nothing is truly significant about him, he can help with catching the thief, but by then you'll probably have something better to do that.

(47) I can't draw [Symbol] for the guy in the clothes shop!
Star- Start at the bottom left corner
Heart- One side of the heart is a little bigger then the other.
"2 eights/4 cirlces”- It's actually just 4 circles connected (A clover). Be sure to leave space in the middle so it looks like 5 circles somewhat.
The "V"- Start on the left side first.... Isn't it viewtiful?
The Kanji- Draw it IN ORDER, it's a tricky one.... Very tricky.

(48) I need a gimmick gear! Where is it?
Beat Ida 3 times in Shinshu Fields.

(49) Camellia isn't in Sei-an city, is it a glitch?
Headbutt her when she is in Kamiki.

(50) I can't find some trees in Sei-an city! Where are they?
The 3 hidden ones are below. For all the others you just have to look for, it's not that hard.
1. Behind Mr. Flowers house
2. IN Mr. Flowers house
3. ON Mr. Flowers head

(51) Where is the mushroom to get the inferno brush technique?
Near the Tea shop, there is a save point... If you stick to the right side and look around you will see some moles. Beat them at their own game and you will get an item. Give that Item to the tea shop owner and he will give you the mushroom.

(52) How do I get the fruit from the tree in N. Ryoshima coast?
When you first get there, Yoichi the archer is around. Find him, and use the water near him and connect it to his arrow. It will ripen the fruit for you to cut down. This is miss-able Though you are only missing 30 praise.

(53) ARGHHH!!! I can't beat marlin!! He's impossible to catch! Do I have to catch him?
Yes, this is quite hard... May take a couple tries. Watch the fish, when it does a little maneuver in the water it's most likely going to turn (so you need to tilt the control stick the other way). You can be going back and forth quite quickly. It's really all up to you, just try to do your best. And remember, this isn't required!. All you get really is a brush technique that you probably won't use... If you REALLY want it though, I'd ask someone to help you out by copying your save data and putting it online, then someone can go and beat it for you and send the data back to you. Sorry I cannot be of much help here, you could try practicing with the guy in Sei-an Aristocratic quarter.

(54) One word: BLOCKHEADS! ARGGHHHH!!! (Blockhead Grande too)
1. Paint the dots in order
2. Record it via Phone or Camera; it's probably the best method
3. You could use a dry erase marker on the TV screen; you can use the home button to pause.
4. You could use a piece of paper making a grid. Once again, use home button to pause.

(55) Mkay, I played over 31 hours and STILL haven't unlocked the secret theater...
Beat the game.

(56) Hardhead, what does it do?
Allows you to break rocks, if you haven't gotten the powerslash upgrade.

(57) What's the snowball at the entrance to Wep'keer do?
Actually... No one knows. Everyone suspects it's just.... There.

(58) A devil gate isn't showing up....
Progress in the story, it'll appear there later.

(59) Wawku shrine, there is a snow blower thing. I know what to do, but it moves to fast!
You can spam Veil of mist to help you out.

(60) The cannons keep killing me before I even get close! How do I kill them?
Veil of mist once again, the cannon shots will move slower so you can knock them back with powerslash.

(61) I want to race Kai again, when can I do that?
Near the end of the game before the point of no return, you can go to forest to race her again.

(62) Never mind... She's too hard...
She doesn't cut through the forest! You can though, so use that to your advantage. You can also clear out the trees before you race.

(63) Where is the last Rosary?! I can't find it!
You can get it earlier then the point of no return by beating the thief side-quest in Sei-an city, and then giving the valuables you got from him to their owners. It'll then be for sale at the weapon shop.
Otherwise, you can't get it until after the point of no return =(

(64) Wait, what? Point of no return? Where's that?
You'll know, Issun warns you. The game also asks you "Do you have resolve?" Be sure to save before going.

(65) *gasp*.... Kamui.... Devil gate.... *gargle* (help)
Buy lots of Vengeance slips, they give you invulnerability, you get TONS of Yen so don't worry about that. Also, spam Veil of mist. Then it should be cake.

(66) When can you get yen for Praise?
Get 6020 praise in a single playthrough. It can be spent.

(67) Do you get anything for completing tomes?
Nope, nothing but the satisfaction of doing so!

(68) Where are the locations for the Stray beads?
There's way to much for me to type them here, so here's an FAQ.

(69) Where are the locations for the Sun Fragments?

(70) What do I need for S ranks?
Here they are, remember, you can spend the yen/praise/demon fangs
4 or less Game Over and Continues.
550 Enemies or more defeated.
4 Million or more yen
300 or more demon fangs
4500 or more Praise

(71) I need MOAR Yen!
Kamui devil gate... You get AT LEAST a million yen.

post game
(72) I've beaten the game.... What does that seal do that you make in Ponc'tan?!
The credits and epilogue were taken out of the Wii-Version ='(
Normally, it would appear in the credits.

(73) Uh.... Where are the credits?
Taken out, along with the epilogue.

(74) Then where is the “Reset” song from the credits?
They are in “Presents From Issun” that you get from beating the game and playing over 31 hours.

(75) What gender is Ammy?
She is addressed as a Female, and is Female in the Japanese Shinto Religion. Though the game developers have stated that she is Gender-less.

(76) What do I keep for New Game +
Items (except Mermaid coins)
Lose the best weapon of the 3 types
You keep artifacts besides the water and fire tablet, fogpot, and the thief gloves
You keep your stats
You keep praise
You keep Yen
You keep treasure
Animal tome is there, but it's reset to zero
Weapons keep gold dust upgrades (Even the best ones)

(77) What do these, "Karmic transformers" do?
Change the way Ammy looks. You can use the Karmic returner to return to normal.

(78) I didn't unlock some videos...
You need all S-rank for some.

(79) The music is AWESOME! Where can I get the soundtrack?
I got mine off Amazon, it was about $70 and WELL worth it ^_^
BUT scratch that. washingsolution found a much better deal. Much cheeper, and still worth it.

(80) Easy way to tell how far you are in the game.
Take a look at the stray beads you have. Look at the last one you got and add a % sign, that's a good way to tell.
Of course... It only works if you are actually trying to get them >.>

(81) General Weapon descriptions, and locations?
There are 3 types of weapons and 5 weapons of each type. Reflectors, Rosaries, and Glaives.

Reflector: Good all around type, decent range and attack power. You can block attacks with it as a secondary weapon (You can get demon fangs this way by pressing A as the attack connects, this can't work on all enemies). A dojo technique will increase its power when you have 2 equipped, one in primary one in secondary.

BE SURE TO TIME ATTACKS! Otherwise combos won't work out well.

Divine Retribution: You start out with it
Snarling Beast: Gotten by beating a boss in the story (Ink Bullet)
Infinity Judge: Kusa Village shop.
Trinity: Sei-an's weapon shop after progressing the story quite a ways.
Solar Flare: When you get all brush techniques that are gotten through main story line. (Fire source)

Rosary: longest range of all the weapons, but weak rapid attacks. It can hit a lot of enemies at once. When equipped as a secondary weapon, it can fire even longer. The attack is different depending on the Rosary. Rapid Fire with Devout Beads, Exorcism beads, and Tundra beads. Shotgun style-like with Life Beads and Resurrection Beads. To rapid fire, press Z then C rapidly. A dojo technique will increase it's power when one is equipped to Primary and another to secondary.

There really is no timing to attacking with these... Just shake the wii-mote really.

Exorcism Beads: After beating a boss.

Glaive: Highest power of all weapons, but shortest range. You can charge attacks with it. As a sub-weapon, its attack changes with each different Glaive. Lunge attack, and an uppercut-like strike with . It's the same when used in air though, Ammy rides on the glaive as it charges towards the enemy. A dojo technique can increase its power when 1 glaive is equipped as a primary and another glaive as a secondary, it also shortens charge time.

(The way the game states how to use them, is stated in question 11)Start your attack by shaking the wii-mote, this will cause the glaive to start charging it's attack. Once you stop shaking, the glaive will attack. Start shaking again right after you stop charging the first attack to start charging the second attack, then stop shaking the wii-mote to attack again when you want. Rinse, lather, repeat. Then you have mastered glaives! Not to difficult, is it?

Tsumugari: After beating a boss.
Seven Strike: Sei-An weapon shop. (Ink bullet)

Eighth Wonder: Ponc'tan shop. (Ink bullet)
Thunder Edge: After beating a boss. (Lightning source)

(82) Getting Demon fangs.
You can get these quite easily with Brown Rage and Golden Fury, these don't need any explanation really. Finishing moves to get demon fangs from enemies, however, will take up a lot of room in this so I'll post a helpful FAQ already about it. It also has other great tips as well!

((Credit goes to theranmafan for the Floral finisher FAQ!))

Using Brown Rage and Golden fury in Devil Gates will give you loads of Demon fangs, I suggest you get them there.

(83) Brush technique tips
This is for tips on how to draw and obtain ALL the techniques....
Here it goes...

Rejuvenation
Tip: Just spill Ink on the spot... Not hard at all...

Obtained by: Following story

Power Slash
Tips: It's just a straight line, as you press down the A button quickly move the wii-mote letting go of the A button before you stop, if you got it right it will be a completely straight line. If you have trouble with that, just use Z. Soon it will just be second nature to you and you don't even need to think about it.

Obtained by: Following story

Sunrise
Tip: Just draw a circle in the sky, make sure nothing is in your way. Not hard at all.

Obtained by: Instantly, really. But you can't use it until a certain part (Issun hints it).

Greensprout: Bloom
Tips: Draw a circle around any withered plants, trees, or clovers. Circles are generally easy, but practice makes perfect! If you have trouble, trying getting the entire plant or tree in the circle (Worked for me when I had trouble). Experiment, it's just solely up to you on which way is best.

Obtained by: Following story

Cherry Bomb
Tip: Circle again. Then after the circle is drawn don't let go of the B button, start in the middle of the circle and draw a line going out of the circle like a bomb fuse.

Obtained by: Tama's house at night (Get this ASAP) It is required for story.

Greensprout: Water Lily
Tip: Circle in the water, see Bloom for tips on drawing circles
