Widow or Revenant for a Soldier?

T, get the Mattock, otherwise use the Revenant. Unless you like sniping them one at a time.

I'm at a loss here. How the heck do you get a Widow with the soldier? I thought it's only an option for the infiltrator.

Revenant is what you get if you pick the assault rifle if you already have training in it.
Claymore for those already using shotguns.
Widow for sniper rifle skill.

The Soldier class can get any one of the three, as they already have training in all three weapon categories.

I love the Mattock for my Adept insanity run, it's definitely got uses outside of soldier.

Revenant.
Soldier is for quickly distributing heavy damage and continued suppressing fire. Revenant + mantis+ hardened adrenaline rush fits that bill best.

Hard to say, for Mattock is basically Viper without scope to begin with. If you played WW2-theme shooter before, you might think of Mattock as a space-age Garand.

And how your Soldier fight by the way. Revenant is actually useless if you duck behind a cover and fire bursts from a distance. Revenant won't shine if you don't close in fast and fire from SMG-like range where lack of accuracy isn't a problem.

Sometimes, I don't even count this thing as an assault rile, but an overgrown SMG for the application is so similar...

Technically it isn't an assault rifle. It is a LMG, light machine gun. A step above an assault rifle in damage output, a step down in accuracy, but totally awesome when used right.

Useless at distance? Pfft, far from it. As long as you burst fire, you should be effective with at most any range, even longer distances. If you have the AR accuracy upgrade, it becomes much easier to hit targets at range, but you still must fire in bursts. I'm not saying this thing is on par with the mattock or vindicator in terms of accuracy, but it's far from useless as you say, on distant enemies.

Actually, the accuracy of the Revenant isn't completely terrible. It's the recoil. Which, convienently, Adrenaline Rush completely negates. You're not going to land headshot after headshot beyond close range, sure, but I've gunned down the Harbinger on Insanity at medium to long distances multiple times just by popping Hardened Adren Rush and filling his chest full of pain and suffering.
